HARRY E. CAMPBELL, or NEW YORK, N. Y.
WINDOW FRAME AND SASHES.
Application led April 1, 191B.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I. Hallar E. CAMPBELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Window Frames and Sashes, of which the following is a specilication.
The invention is a window-frame and sash, wherein all the structural parts are of wood, except. the laterally extending metal sash plates and metal angle-bare therefor. The invention consists in the cmistruction more particularly hereinafter described.
ln the aceou'ipanying drawingS Figure 1 is an elevation showing' a portion of the two sashes and of the jamb adjacent thereto, the jamb iall being broken away at its upper portion to show the underlying parts in vertical section. Fig. 2 is a Section on the line 2, 2 of Fig'. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
A and B are .sliding sashes, provided with any suitable counterbalancing means, not shown. The sash frames are of wood, and the glass panes C are seated in said trames and secured by stripe D in any suitable way. The two j ambs respectively on opposite sides ol the Sashes are alike, so that a description of one jamb applies to both. Said jambes are hollow, and their walls are of wood. One of said jambe is shown at E, and coinprises the following parts: a rear wall F, an outer eide wall G, a front wall H, and an inner side Wall forme/d as hereinafter described. The outer side wall (l is secured to the rear Wall F and to the front wall H. Seated at one edge in a mortise in rear Wall F is a wooden bar I which projects into the space within the jamb and is parallel to wall G. Secured to the face of bar I is a artition J with the faoe of which the saches A, B are in sliding Contact, said bar covering the joint between said sashee. The outer member K oi the inner jamb wall is secured to front jamb wall H, and the inner member L is secured to rear wall F and preferably meets bar I.
Between the lnember K and partition J and between partition J and member L are gaps or vertical slots, which extend from top to bottom of the jamb. In the gap between member K and partition J are two angle-strips M, N of metal, the apexes of the angles facing one another--a space being Specification of Letters Patent.

left between said apexea. These angle-Strips are respectively secured lo their supports--- namely, member K and partition .l --in any suitable way. ,Preferably as shown. I insert one arm of the strip in a mortisr in its` snpport and attach the other arm to a4 suitably beveled portion ot' said support. In the gap between partition J and member L are two Similar Strips 0, P, respectively secured to said partition J and member il in the inanner already described. e
0n the sashes A, B are laterallyextending metal platee Q. Il. 'which prrtrrably enter niortises in the edges ot' aaiil :;as l1e1. and may be secured therein by mi rs S. The plate Q. on sash ll euri-.rs iirtwi--fo the anglestrips M. N'. and the planli on sash A enters between the angle-ships: (l. l). VBoth plates, therefore` enter the janib and preferably terminate at their irre Vertical edges in slidinlr contact with the bar I. I preferably secure upon the face of bar I, means for protecting said tace against the w ar thereon due to the sliding` oi said plates, such as a metal plate T. against which the free edges of Said plates hear.
It will be obvious. from the foregoing that ill the structural :members arr ot wood, excepting the lateral plates Q, Il, the anglo strips M. N and (l7 ,E and` when present, the wearingY plate T: also, that market wooden sasbes can here be uned, since the lateral metal plates Q, It are easily attached to them. Metal angleetrips are also obtainable, and can be applied by any house earpeuter.
I claim:
1. A window-frame and sash construe" tion, comprising a hollow jamb of wood. having in itsl inner wall a vertical slot, metal angle-strips secured on opposite sides of said slot, with the aporrea of their angles approximated, a sa ih of Wood., and on said sash. a laterally intending' metal plate enterini:r said jamb through. said slot between and in eontmt with .said angrleetrips.
2. A window-frame and sash, as in claim 1, the said laterally extending plates being received in mortises in the Side rails of said sash.
il, each of said angle-strips having one arm entering; and secured in the. jamb wall adjacent to said slot, and the other arm bearing upon a support.
4. A Window-frameand sash, comprising A Window-frame and Sash, as in claim i metal angle-strips swm'cd un mlmslu sides in tcstnmny whclcuf I lmvu Mxud my of Sad sluts', will] (im upexvh nf huir anglo@ sigmmu'e in p11-sumen of two witlmssos.
