This invention relates to protective covering for kitchen cabinets, closet drawers and the like and it hasparticular reference vto a removable mat tofbe placed in the drawers` of `kitchen cabi-y 5 nets, closets and other household furniture.
The principal `object of the invention is to provide a protective mat or covering comprised of a material which resists moisture, stains and the like and generally protects the contents l of the drawers and which is easily removed for cleansing.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character specified having a stifening medium which is provided with suitllE able markings for the direction of the purchaser in adapting the device to drawers of varying Sizes and dimensions.
Another object of the invention is to provide a drawer mat of the character specified, which includes certain provisions for securing the protective covering about the stiifening medium and which securing means may be applied without the aid of tools or instruments of any character, thus making for simplicity and economy in construction, adjustment and application.
With the foregoing objects as paramount, the invention has particular reference to its salient features of construction and arrangement of parts which will become manifest as the description proceeds, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein:-
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cabinet drawer showing the invention applied.
Figure 2 is a perspective view.
35 Figure 3 is a detail view of the stiffening board with the covering partly torn away.
Figure 4 is a detail view of one of the corner clips, and
Figure 5 is a fragmentary view ofone corner of the covering showing the method of folding.
Continuing with a more detailed description of the drawing, 1 designates an article of furniture, such as a bureau, cabinet or the like having drawers 2, in the bottom of which the invention is shown.
The invention is comprised primarily of a waterproof covering 3, preferably of oil cloth, cellophane or other suitable materials and cut in any desired shape to conform to the bottom of a drawer. It is understood that the cover 3 is larger than the dimensions of the drawer in order that its edges might be folded under to such a degree that the exposed surface of the covering will be equal to the size of the drawer.
In order to lend body to the mat, a stifening `board 4 is provided, on which is printed a series of lines a and b, representing guide lines in reducing the mat to lt into any Ysize drawer. These lines are definitely spaced apart andare designated by numerals as shownin Figure 3, G0 denotinginches or fractions'thereof in order that the stiffening board maybe sized to correspond with the drawer without requiring the use of a measuring instrument.
When the stiffening board 4 has been cut to 65 conveniently fit into a drawer, the covering 3, which is already provided with a corner slit 5, is applied over the surface of the board 4 by folding the marginal edges thereof, over the edges of the board and securing the corners by 7 0 means of a clip 6. If it is necessary to reduce the size of the board 4, the covering 3 may be applied by simply extending the corner slit 5 and folding the edges further under the board 4. In so forming the edges of the covering over the board 4, the flap 7 dened by slitting the corner is rst folded on line g, thence on lines c and d while the other edge 8 is folded on lines e and f. The edges are thus folded to embrace the edges of the board 4 on all sides. The metal 80 clip 6, comprised of the structure shown in Figure 4, is bent upon itself along the dotted lines and clamped upon the inwardly turned corners of the covering 3 beneath the board 4, as shown in Figure 2, to thus securely hold the covering on the board.
The mat thus produced is placed in the bottom of the interior of the drawer in the manner shown in Figure 1 and is provided with a tab 9 which passes through the covering 3 and 90 is secured to the board 4 to effect its removal and replacement.
The drawing illustrates the invention in two definite shapes, one being rectangular to conveniently t into the type of drawer shown in Figure 1, while the other is substantially square. It is understood that the invention is not limited to any definite shape but may be made in any form desired andadapted for a drawer of any design, size or shape.
It is apparent from the foregoing that the invention maintains a sanitary condition of the drawer as well as the contents thereof by keeping the latter out of direct contact with the drawer and in view of the material of which the invention is constructed, it may be quickly and conveniently removed for cleaning.
Should it be desired to remove the mat from one drawer and adapt it for application to a smaller drawer, it is simply necessary to determine the dimensions of the latter drawer, remove the covering 3 from the board 4 and cut along the predetermined lines a or b in accordance with the dimensions of the drawer. The slits 5 in the corners of the covering 3 are made longer by using a pair of scissors or the like and again applying to the board 4 and securing by the clips 6. The mat is then ready to be placed in the drawer.
Manifestly, the construction shown is capable of some modication and such modification as is considered within the scope and meaning of the appended claims is also considered within the spirit and intent of the invention.
What is claimed is:
1. A drawer mat including a stiffening board having sizing lines imprinted thereon, to prede-r termine the operation of conforming the same to a drawer; a moisture proof covering therefor arranged to conceal one side of said board and having slitted corners whereby its edges may be folded under the edges of said stiffening board vand means for securing said covering on said board. 1
2. A protective mat forfdrawers and the like including a stiffening board having guide lines imprinted thereon to predetermine the opera- Levasva tion of sizing the same to a drawer, a covering of moisture resisting material having its edges folded to embrace the edges of said board and means for securing the folded edges of said covering at its corners to hold the same in xed relation to said board.
3. A protective mat for drawers and the like including a stiffening board having guide lines in spaced relation one to another and to the edges of said board to predetermine the sizing of said board with respect to a drawer or the like, a covering for said board comprised of moisture proof material, having its corners slitted inwardly to enable its edges to be folded under the edges of said board and means for securing the corners of said covering.
4. A mat for drawers and the like including a semiexible board having lines printed thereon in spaced relation to each other and to the edges of said board and numerically squared, a covering forv said board, a tab secured to said board and passing through an yopening in said covering and means for securing said covering in folded position to hold the same in relation to said board.
