IMPROVEMENT, IN POCKET-BOXES FOR VIOLIN-STRINGS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 197,585, dated November 27, 1877 application filed April 19, 1877. l

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN S. ASHMAN, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a Pocket-Box for Containing Violin-Strings, vof which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specication, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my box open. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same closed, and Fig. 3 is a cross-section through the center of the same.

My invention has for itsobject to provide a neat, cheap, and convenient box for containing violin-strings, which can be easily carried in the vest-pocket, the box, when open, exposing the strings in such manner that any particular one can be easily selected and withdrawn, the strings, when thus carried, being always at hand, ready for use, whichis not the case when placed in the violin-box, as heretofore.

To enable others skilled in the art to understand and use my invention, Iwill proceed toV ing of semicircular form, and projecting up above the front one, d, both of these anges,

The violin-strings f, coiled in the usual manner, are placed within the lower portion b of the box, between the iianges d e, the ange e yserving as abacking to keepthe .strings in place on that side, and prevent them from projecting out, so as to interfere with the shutting down of the top or cover a of the box.

The two portions@J b, instead of being hinged together, as shown, may be made separate, if desired, and be held together bythe and the inconvenience of opening the violinbox, in which the strings. are now usually kept, and which is frequently in another apartment,is thus avoided. Furthermore, the construction/of the box causes it, Whenopen, to expose the stings in such manner as to Vfacilitate the selection and removal of any particular string which may be required.

Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The within-described pocket-box for containing violin-strings, consisting of the two narrow semicircular portions ab, the latter being provided with ianges d c, to confine the strings in place when the box is open, substantially as set forth.
