Description

GARMAN. Box or Package.
Patented Nov. 27, I877.-
UNITED psi-Arne PATENT OFFICE- MYRON A. OARMAN, OF (JANANDAIGUA, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT l N BOXES OR PACK'AGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 197,542, dated November 27, 1877; application filed I October 20, 1877.
To all. whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MYRON A. CABMAN, of
Oanandaigua, in the county of Ontario and and useful Improvements in Boxes or Packages; and I do hereby declare the following,
to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain improvements in boxes; and consists in the parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a central vertical section of a box embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents the two sections of the double box removed from each other. Fig. 3 shows the upper section, with a bottom View of its cover removed.
The lower box-section A is not provided with an ordinary cover, but is closed by the upper box-section B, which seats into the open top-of said lower section, and thus takes the place of a usual cover to the latter, while at the same time it serves as an independent chamber.
The double box is made, preferably, of pasteboard, with the exception of the close top 0 of the upper section, which latter is made of metal, though, if desired, other material may be substituted for either of the same. This close top is suitably connected with the upper section, and is adapted to prevent any escape of powder or other matter which it may contain from being discharged, except through the central opening 0. The cover D of the box is provided with the yielding stopper or pad, d, secured to its under side,-and which fits over the contracted opening of the lower sectiontop when in place upon the box.
The double box thus made is adapted to receive and carry in small compass any suitable articles or matter which may be put into its two sections without commingling the same; but the use I specially have in view thereby is to have the lower section serve as a receptacle for a bottle of mouth-wash, and the upper section to contain tooth-powder.
The closed top 0 of the upper section both prevents thepowder from spilling and from being exposed when the cover D is removed,
but is also of especial moment in that thepowder is poured out from the opening 0, and
thus the tooth-brush is not put into the powder-box, thus keeping the powder clean and pure, and also obviating wetting the same by the dampened brush. The powder is hence preserved from caking, from becoming impure, and can, if desired, be used by different persons with perfect propriety, while the bottle of mouth-wash is rendered readily accessible, and .economy of space is provided.
It is evident that different changes of form might be made in constructing this box without departing from my invention. Thus it is not necessary that the box be round in transverse section, as it might be square or of other cross-sectional form; or the one box-section whlch serves as a cover for the other section may be made to fit 11113021111 open bottom, side,
or end of the latter, instead of into its} top.
While I preferably make the contracted outlet for discharge in the center of the clostop, it is evident that this location orplac is immaterial, and that the discharge openng may be made in any other part of the said close top. In such case the stopper or valve secured to the under side of the coverwould be correspondingly changed in position, so as to fit over and seal the discharge. I
Having fully described my invenion, what I claim as new, and desire to $80116 by Letters Patent, is-
A double box consisting in the combination, with the lower box-section having an open top, of the upper box-section, adapted to seat therein, said upper box-section ,heing made with a close top, formed'lwitlnthesmall discharge-opening therein, substantially as de scribed. v
.In testimony that I olaim the'foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 18th day of October, 1877.
