Description

' 0. E. KELLEY.
Pence-Barbs.
No 197,378. Patented Nov. 20, I871.
N, PETERS, PHOTO-LITHOGRAFHER, WASHINGTON. D c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFF-Ion.
CHARLES E. KELLEY, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGN OR TO HENRY ROBERTS, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN FENCE-BARBS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 197,378, dated November 20,187), application filed August 2, 1877. 1
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. KELLEY, of the city of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barbed Wire or Cord for Fences; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompan'ying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Thisinvention relates to that class of barbedwire .fences in which the barbs are secured in position between two or more twisted ropes or wires; and the improvement consists in the construction and adaptation of the barb to be held between the twisted wires or ropes, substantially as hereinafter described and claimed.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the nature and character of the invention, in which- Figure 1 represents a section of a fence provided with my improved barbed cord or wire, and Fig. 2 is a view of one of the barbs detached from the wire.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
The barbs may be of cast metal, or struck up or wrought, and provided with one or more points or barbs, a, the center or shank b thereof having a groove or grooves, c, to admit the cord or wire d, and prevent its displacement, all as shown.
The shank or body I), it will be observed, is considerably larger in diameter than the largest portion of either of the points a; and that, by reason of its configuration, which should approximate to that of a cube or a cylinder, the transverse channels 0 across its sides, while being of sufficient depth to receive the wires (1, and of such length that a considerable portion of the wires between the points at which the same are twisted together will be embedded therein, will not materially weaken the device.
In constructing or preparing the article for use, the barbs are simply placed between the strands or cords of wire, said strands or cords being inserted in the grooves, and the wire twisted until said barbs are firmly secured thereto, as shown and indicated in Fig. 1, where the bow-shaped parts of the wires, between the points at which they are twisted together, will be within the grooves, and thus hold the barb between two bonds or bows, which will obviously have some spring-power, and thus tend to prevent any accidental dislodgment of the barb.
The points or barbs may all point in one uniform direction, or'be arranged in various positions, as may be preferred.
It will be observed that the form and construction of the barbs are such as to prevent them from being bent, broken, or wrenched from their places by any ordinary usage or strain, to which they may be subjected.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A barb for wire fences formed with points a and an intermediate enlarged shank or body, 12, substantially as herein described, and for the purposes set forth, the said body having the transverse channels cadaptedto be clasped between the springbows or bend of the twisted wire, all substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I hereto affix-my signature in presence of two witnesses.
- CHARLES E. KELLEY. Witnesses:
