UNITED STA S PATENT QFFICE.
- QBENJAMDT F. KELLY, or SHELOOTA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN TILL-CHECKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No- 197,377, dated November 20, 1877; application filed i August 18, 1877.
.F. KELLY,
. Be it known that I, BENJAMIN .of Shelocta, in the county of Indiana and State of Pennsylvania, haveinvented a new and valuable Improvement in Combination- Locks; and Ido hereby declare thatthe following is a full,'clear, and exact description of the constructionand operation of the same,
reference beinghad to the annexed drawings,
making a part'of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked there- ,7 Figure l ofthe drawings is a transverse vertical sectional view of my combinationlock. Figs.g2, 3, and 4 are details thereof. Fig. 5 is; a perspective view of my combina;
tion-lock attached to a drawer.
. The nature of my inventionconsists in the construction and arrangement of a moneydrawerlock, as willlbe hereinafter more fully set forth. .1 v p The anne drawings, to which reference is'gmade, fullyillustrate my invention. A represents thecase or frame, and B the drawer sliding therein. On the inside, inthe back partof the case A, is made a circular re-' cess,'(l, around which is fastened ametalliov ring, D, having upon its front a lug, d, projecting inwardtoward the center,' and on the back of the inner end of this lug-is formed a rearwardly-projecting point, a.
The lockis composed of two circular disks,
G and G, of suchdiameter astopass through the metallic ringDand into therecess C. Said disks being inadeeach with a notch, a, in the edge, when. placed to coincide with each other and with" the lug d, allow said ing to pass through them, and thus admit-of the wheels G G entering the recess 0; or, in otherwords,
passing within the ring D. If either one of the wheels is thenturned toeither side, the lug at .will prevent it from being withdrawn. The wheels Grand G are secured, respectively,
7 on the rearendsiof a tube, H', and a rod, I,
passing through the tube.v This tube and-rod pass entirely through the drawer B-from front to rear, the wheels being behind the; drawer, and on thefrontends of the tube and-rod are,
respectively, secured knobsJ J, which are provided with numbers, letters, or other devices as ordinarily used on combination-locks. 0n the front of the drawer, and concentric with the knobs, is a corresponding dial, K.
It will readily be seen that, the lock being set by the proper combination, so that the notches a in the wheels G Gwill coincide with each other and with the lug d, the drawer can be pulled out, and in like manner it can bepushed in and then locked. I
The wheels G G are perforated with any desired number of holes arranged in a concentric circle, and at such distance from the center that the point as on the lug at will enter any one of such holes in the disk nearest to it, and thereby prevent .both wheels or disks from turning together while setting the combination. p 7
The combination may be changed by changing the position of either or bothof the wheels; by reversing the position of said wheelsthat is, placing the wheel now on; thetube on the rod, and vice 'versa; and by changing the position of the ring D. I'
By the position of the look behind the drawer, while the operating device is in front thereof, it becomes impossible to pick the lock either by the insertion of any instrument, or by sound to find out the combination.
, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of thering -D with lug d, having point as, and the perforated. wheels G G, having notches a, substantially as and for the purposes set forth. n q
2. The combination of the ring D with lug ed, the wheels G G with notches a, the tube H, rod I, knobs J J, and dial K, all arranged with a drawer, B, and its casing I or frame A, substantially as and for the purposes set forth. In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence oftwo witnesses. V f
