Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 197,162, dated November 13, 1877; application filed August 16,1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW G. MYERS, of Dayton, in the county of Montgomery, and in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lubricators; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the several parts of a lubricator, whereby I am enabled to use it for the distribution of oil, either by centrifugal force or otherwise, as the nature of the case may require.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawing which makes part of this specification, A represents a hollow metallic ball, which is provided upon two opposite sides with the hollow stems B and D. The inner surfaces of these stems are provided with screws-threads.
0 represents an oil-channel, which is formed upon the outside of the ball A, and which connects with each of the stems, as seen.
The stem B connects directly with the interior of the ball, while the stem D only connects directly with the channel 0, but indirectly to the ball through the channel and the stem B.
6 represents a screw-plug, which enters the stem B and securely closes it.
E represents a spud or hollow nozzle, which screws into the stem D, and which is tapering in form, and provided upon its outer surface with a screw-thread.
(0 represents a regulating-screw for the oil.
When this lubricator is intended to be used for distributing oil by centrifugal force, the nozzle E isalways connected, as seen in the figure, to the stem D.
It will be observed that when the lubricator is revolved the oil will be thrown or forced outward toward and into the stem B, and thence, through the channel 0, into the nozzle E, whence it passes to the journal or box to be oiled.
If the lubricator is to be used upon a stationary object, or one which does not require itto be revolved with it, the nozzle E is screwed into the stem B, and the plug e is screwed in stem D. The oil will then flow directly to the object to be lubricated.
I do not broadly claim a lubricator having an exterior channel opening into the reservoir, and into the neck or shank of the same, respectively, as such is not new.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In combination with an oil-vessel, A, provided with stems or short tubes B D, and an external channel, 0, one end of which leads into the oil-reservoir, the detachable nozzle E, and the detachable plug e, interchangeable with each other, whereby the lubricator may be used either on stationary or rotating objects, substantially as herein set forth.
