6 Claims. (c1. 139-185) The present invention pertains to loom shuttle boxes and has more particular reference to the construction of the back box plate thereof.
The conventional shuttle loom includes a reciprocating lay which carries a shuttle box at each end thereof, and a reed extending between the shuttle boxes. The back Wall or box plate of each shuttle box is pivoted or otherwise secured at its outer end to the lay, and is provided with I 10 a shuttle guiding surface adapted to be aligned with the reed. It has been proposed toprovide for adjustment of the shuttle guiding surface by making the back box plate in two separate pieces pivotally connected together as by means of' a 5 universal joint. Such'prior construction is highly efficient in providing for the initial alignment of new box plates with agiven reed but does not provide for ready re-alignment with a different reed after the box plate is once installed.
It frequently happens that in changing the character of cloth woven on a particular loom a different reed will be required. At other times, when the reed becomes worn it will be reversed a to present a new wearing surface to the'shuttle.
Lack of uniformity in reed construction usually necessitates a re-alignment of the back box plate each time the reed is so reversed or changed. The present invention accordingly'contemplates the provision of a back box plate which'is constructed to facilitate its alignment or re-alignment with the reed. e
In accomplishment of'the result mentioned, I have provided for adjustment of the inner end of the box plate by adjusting means which include a resilient pad between the box plate and the lay sword, and adjusting elements such as screws carried by the sword. Preferably, the box plate is comprised of outer and inner members 40 which are pivotally connected together, as by means of a universal joint, the shuttle guiding surface being provided on the inner member. An adjustable pivot may be provided at the outer end of the shuttle guiding surface to facilitate alignment of the shuttle guiding surface as viewed from the back of the lay.

The lay 1 is but fragmentarily illustrated, only the right hand end thereof being shown. The lay is slotted at2 for the reception of a picker stick 3 which carries a picker 4 for picking the shuttle 5. The lay is carried upon lay swords of which only the right hand sword 6 is shown. The elements thus far mentioned are old in the art and may be of any suitable usual construction. "The shuttle boxis comprised of a front box plate 7, of usual constru'ctionand the back box plate of the present invention. The back box plate is preferably comprised of an outer memher 8 and an inner member 9, the right hand end of the right hand shuttle box being considered the outer end thereof and the end opening toward the center of the lay being the inner end. The outer member 8 is attached at its outer end to the'lay, as by being pivoted upon a bolt 10 which passes down through a metal flange 1} I on the lay. granted March 8, 1932, to W. 1. Simpson. Other pivotal connections may be employed if so desired.
The outer end of the inner member 8 is provided with a rearwardly extending flange 17 the end of which is turned downwardly and threaded i The inner end of the member 9 is secured to the lay sword 6 through the medium of ver- T 9 is slightly thicker at 21 outwardly of screws 19 than at 22 inwardly of said screws. The pad 20 will accordingly be compressed more where it contacts the thickened portion 21, which serves to hold the pivot screw 18 against the lay. The screws 19 may be tightened or loosened substantially simultaneously, in which event the shuttle guiding surface will be pivoted about a vertical axis passing through the point of pivot screw 18. On the other hand, the holes 23 in the lay sword for the screws 19 are suificiently large to permit either one of these screws to be tightened or loosened independently of the other, thus pivoting the shuttle guiding surface about a horizontal axis passing through the point of the pivot screw 18.
The preferred method of adjusting the box plate is as follows:
First, the universal joint 16 is loosened slightly. Then the pivot screw 18 is adjusted to align the outer end of the shuttle guiding surface with the reed. Then the screwsl9 are adjusted to vertically and horizontally align the inner end of the shuttle guiding surface with the reed and, finally, the universal joint is tightened thereby firmly securing the parts in adjusted position.
It will be apparent that I have provided means for rapidly and accurately aligning or re-aligning the shuttle guiding surface of the back box platewith the reed, the desirability of such a construction having been previously explained.
Having fully disclosed the preferred embodiment of my invention, I claim;
1. A back box plate for looms, said box plate being comprised of an outer member adapted to be attached to a loom lay, an inner member provided with a shuttle guiding surface, an ad just-able pivot at the outer end ofsaid shuttle guiding surface, adjusting means for adjusting said inner member about said pivot, and means pivotally securing said inner member tothe inner end of said outermember at a point intermediate said adjustable pivot and said adjusting means.
2. A back box plate for looms, said box plate being comprised of an outer member adapted to be pivotally attached at its outer end to a loom lay, an inner member provided with a shuttle guiding surface, an adjustable lay-engaging element at the outer end of said shuttle guiding surface which element provides a pivot point about which said inner member may pivot, adjusting means for adjusting said inner member about said pivot point, and means pivotally securingsaid members together at a point intermediate the ends of said inner member.
3. A back box plate for looms, said box plate being comprised of an outer member adapted to be pivotally attached at its outer end to a loom lay, an inner member provided with a shuttle guiding surface, an adjustable lay-engaging screw at the outer end of said shuttle guiding surface which screw provides a pivot point about which said inner member may pivot, and adjusting means for universally adjusting said inner member about said pivot point, said members being connected by a universal joint.
4. In a loom, the combination of a lay adapted to carry a reed, a lay sword, and a shuttle box carried on said lay; said shuttle box including a back box plate comprised of an outer member pivotally secured at its outer end to the lay and an inner member provided with a shuttle guiding surface, said members being connected by a universal joint, and means for adjustably securing the inner end of said inner member to the lay sword, said means including a resilient pad between said inn'er member and said lay sword.
5. In a loom, the combination of a lay adapted to carry a reed, a lay sword, and a shuttle box carried on said lay; said shuttle box including a back box plate comprised of an outer member pivotally secured at its outer end to the lay and an inner member provided With a shuttle guiding surface, saidinembers being pivotally connected by a universal joint, an adjustable screw at the outer end of said shuttle guiding surface the point of which screw provides a pivot point for said inner member, and means carried by the lay sword for adjusting said inner member about both a vertical and a horizontal axis passing through said pivot point.
' 6. In a loom, the combination of a lay adapted to carry a reed, a lay sword, and a shuttle box carried on said lay; said shuttle box including a back box plate comprised of an outer member pivotally secured at its outer end to the lay and an inner member provided with a shuttle guiding surface, said members being pivotally connected by a universal joint, an adjustable screw carried by said inner member at the outer end of said shuttle guiding surface the point of which screw engages the lay to provide a pivot point for said inner member, and means including spaced screws carried by the lay sword and a resilient pad between said inner member and said lay sword for adjusting said inner member about both a vertical and a horizontal axis passing through said pivot point.
