This invention pertains to fly shuttle looms, and has more particular reference to shuttle boxes for such looms.
Looms of the type to which my invention applies commonly include a reciprocating lay on which is mounted a shuttle box in which a fly shuttle is received. The shuttle box includes a back box plate having a shuttle guiding surface which must be accurately aligned with the reed so as to properly start the shuttle on its flight across the loom. The outer end of the back box plate is usually rigidly fastened to the lay, either the fastenin means or the box plate being constructed to provide for proper adjustment of the shuttle guiding surface; since the inner end of the box plate is fixed with respect to the lay, being usually fixed to the lay sword, the attaching means for the inner end of the box plate must provide or permit the desired adjustment of the box plate.
Accordingly, it is the principal object of the present invention to provide in a loom having a lay, lay sword and back box plate having an adjustable shuttle guiding surface, an. adjusting member movable transversely of the sword and lay and having a surface abutting a complementary surface of the box plate, the complementary abutting'surfaces being so constructed and arranged as to provide a universal adjustment of the box plate about said member, and means 'for locking the adjusting member and the box plate in adjusted position.
The foregoin and other objects of the invention are accomplished in the construction illustrated on the accompanying drawing, of which:

Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view of certain parts of Fig. 1, this view being to a larger scale;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on line 33 of Fig. 2, and,
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on line 4*-4 of Fig. 2, this view being to a larger scale.
The drawing shows but part of a loom having my invention applied thereto, the parts and mechanisms not shown being of any suitable usual construction and forming no part of the present invention. The drawing shows the right hand end of the usual lay beam l which is fixed to the front face of a sword 2 in the usual manner. A shuttle box is mounted on the lay beam and includes a front box plate 3 and a back box plate the outer end 4 of which is fixed to the lay beam provided with a' shuttle guiding surface which must be accurately aligned with the reed 5' as is well known in the art.- The particular back box plate shown is constructed of two separate pieces. the outer end or piece 4 being relatively fixed and the inner end or piece 6 which carries the shuttle guiding surface 1 being adjustable. The two pieces may be connected by a universal joint indicated generally at 8 and more fully disclosed in patent to W. I. Stimpson, No. 1,848,674 granted March 8, 1932'. Y
The universal joint permits the shuttle guiding surface to be adjusted about different axes, one extending horizontally longitudinally of the lay and shuttle box and the other extending vertically. In other words, the shuttle guiding surface may be tilted about a horizontal axis to bring it into a plane parallel with the reed, and the inner piece having the shuttle guiding surface;

The forward end of stud l1 isprovided with a head l9 having a concave surface 20. .Stud H has an axial bore 2| for the reception of a bolt 22 extending therethrough for a purpose later to be described.
The inner end or piece 6 of the back box plate is provided with a projection 23 on its rear face. The projection 23 has a convex surface 24 complementary to the concave surface 20 of the stud [1. These two complementary surfaces, 20 and 24 form a universal joint connecting the inner end of the box plate and the forward end of stud II. The inner end 6 of the box plate has an opening 25 therein having a concave countersink 2B for the reception of the convex head 21 of the: a by means of a bolt 5. The back box plate is bolt 22. Bolt 22 extends through the opening 25,.
2 in the box plate 6 and the axial bore 2| of the adjustable stud l1 and is secured therein by means of washers 21 and nut 28. The adjustable stud I! is provided with radial slots 29 adjacent one end for reception of means for turning the stud. Stud I! also is provided with a slot 30 extending transversely substantially half way through the stud. Upon tightening the nut 28 on bolt 22, the stud I! is compressed and due to the weakness of'that part of stud l'l'in which slot 38 is located, the threads of the stud I! will be more tightly pressed against the threads of the mem ber 12, thereby preventing turning of the stud'l'l' in the member l2 and locking the stud in member 12.
Thus it is seen that I' have provided means whereby the shuttle guiding surface I of the inner -.end of the box plate 6 may bei-readilyi and. easily .aligned with the reed. Due to the co-operation. of the complementary curved surfaces 20- and 24 -of the'box plate 6 and. stud H respectively, the .box plateis adjustable in relation: to the reed :about a, horizontal axis extending, longitudinally -of thelay. Duev to the transverse=movement of the stud H the box-plate Bis moved forwardly or 1rearwardly, into horizontal alignment with the reed. After the proper adjustment has been ;made,, the box plate may be-locked in adjusted position by means of the bolt 22 and nut 28. ,Further, as nut 28 is tightened on bolt 22the stud I1 is locked against movement by compression of the slot 33. In addition to the foregoing adjust- ;ments, the entire assembly may be adjusted in a vertical plane in relation to the sword by means of the slot and bolt .connectionsof member l2 with the sword 2 Having fully, disclosed the preferred embodi- :ment of my invention, I claim:

3. In a loom, the combination of a lay adapted to carry a reed, a lay sword, and a shuttle box carried on said lay, said shuttle box including a back box plate comprised of an outer member pivotally secured at its outer end to the lay and an inner member provided with a shuttle guiding surface, said members being connected by a universal joint, and means for adjustably securin the inner end of said inner member to the lay sword, said means including an adjustable member carried by said sword and movable transversely thereof, said adjustable member and said innerendof' said inner member being connected bya universal joint whereby said inner member may be adjusted in relation to said adjustable memb'enabout a' horizontal axis, and means for locking. said inner member and said adjustable member in adjusted position.
4. In a 100m,- the-combination of a lay adapted to carry a reed,.a lay'sword, a shuttle'boxincluding a back box plate having a shuttleguiding surface, means'securingthe outer end of said box plate to said lay, a memberadjustably connected to said sword and movable transversely thereof, theiinner end of said box plate and said member having complementary surfaces forming a universal joint whereby said box plate is adjustable in relation to'said member, and means for locking saidbox plate and saidmember in adjusted position;
5. In a loom, the combination of a lay adapted to carry a reed, a sword for supporting 'said lay, a shuttle box carried by. saidlay and having a back box'plate. including. an inner end adapted to be alignedwith said reed, a member adjustably connected to said sword and movable transversely thereof, said member and said inner end of said box plate having complementary abutting surfaces soconstructed and arranged as to provideouniversal adjustment of said box plate about said'member, and means for locking said box plate and said member in adjusted position.
6.
