7 Claims; (01. 139 -165 The present invention relates to picking mechanisms for fiy shuttl looms and, as illustrated herein, relates morev particularly to picker stick checking mechanis 1 One prior type on: picker stick checking mechanism comprises a depending support attached to the lay beam and causing'aflexible check strap loop within which the picker stick'oscillates and which is engaged and moved-lb-y the: picker stick at each end of its oscillation, In devices of this type, itis necessary to provide friction means for retarding the movement of the strap and also to provide readily accessible adiusting means for sa d friction means. In such prior devices, it has not been possible conveniently and accurately to adjust the friction means and hence proper checking of the picker stickhas not-alwayslbeen efiected.
One obj ct ofithe present invention, accordin 'y, is to provide 'ajpicker stick checking mechaanism wherein the friction means may be convenientlyand accurately adjusted. To this end, the frictiOnmeans-includes a bracket secured to the lay having a downwardly extending finger, a supporting member having a downwardly extending 'fing'enf. said. supporting 'member being movable relatively to the first mentioned finger, and means for securing the supporting member ends thereof being clamped and supported in a bracket l8of usual construction fixed to and supported by the laybeam ID by bolts 20,
A second bracket 22 is secured tothe otherside of the lay'opposite to the bracket l8 and provides means'ior supporting and'checking the movement of the strap. The bracket 22 has a portion 24 which extends belowand fits against thefbottom of the. lay Hi andhas a flange 26 which extends upwardly against the front side of the lay. Thebracket 22 is secured to the lay by bolts 28 which extend through slots 30 formed in the portion 24.
The portion or bed plate 24 is provided with a depending finger 32, which is provided with a rounded strap engaging face which engages the inner surface of the check strap I6. The finger 32 is provided at its lower end with a forwardly extending flange which supports. and prevents downward movement of the strap when itis loose or is being adjusted.

The lay beam at its end is provided with the usual shuttle box (not shown) into and out. of which the shuttle is picked by a picker stick 12. The picker" stick I2 oscillates in the slot M in the usual manner.

The eccentric head 40 fits into a transverse slot 42 formed in the forwardlyiextending por-' tion of anadjustable bracket 46. V The bracket 46' is. provided with -a dependingfriction finger 48 which is .provided with a rounded'rear face which engages the outersurface of the check strap 16. Thus; as best shown in Fig. 2,.the check strapl l6 takes a sinuous path between the'friction'fingers 32, and 48. The bracket-J6 is provided with an upwardly projecting rib 50 which fits into a groove 52 formed in the lower surface of the forwardly projecting portion 36 of the bracket 22 and. forms a convenient means for 'preventingundesired transverse movement between the parts and serves. also as a guide, for the forward and rearward adjusting movement of-the bracket 46.
The bracket 46 is provided'with a forwardly and rearwardly extending slot 54'through which the bolt 38 extends. The" slot 54 at its lower end opens into the transverse slot 42. Thus when the bracket 46 is moved rearwardly or forwardly to adjust the position of the finger 48, the bolt 38 remains-in'position butthe bracket 46 is permitted to move relatively thereto. As the bracket 46 and the depending finger 48 thereon are moved rearwardly, the sinuous path or course of the strap is increased and the friction of the strap is correspondingly increased. The position of the bracket 46 is positively and accurately controlled to ob by the eccentric head 48, and, when the desired adjustment has been made, the bolt is locked in adjusted position by a clamping nut 56. By the use of the above construction accurate control of the retardation of the longitudinal movement of the check strap [5 is effected.
. Having thus described a [preferred embodiment of the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A friction device for a picker stick check of the type including a flexible looped strap supported beneath the lay and within which the picker stick oscillates, said device including a bracket fixed to the lay and having a depending friction finger adapted to engage the inner face of said strap, a supporting member adjustably secured to said bracket and having a depending friction finger adapted to engage said strap, and adjusting means for positioning the second friction finger relatively to the first friction finger, said adjusting means comprising a member rotatably mounted in said bracket and having a portion engaging said second bracket for moving said supporting member into adjusted position, and means for locking said adjusting means in adjusted position.
2. A friction device for a picker stick check of the type including a flexible looped strap supported beneath the lay and within which the picker stick oscillates, said device including a bracket fixed to the lay and having a depending friction finger adapted to engage the inner face of said strap, a supporting member adjustably secured to said bracket and having a depending friction finger adapted to engage said strap, and
a transverse slot, an adjusting member rotatably mounted in said bracket and having an eccentric portion fitting into said slot to move said supporting member into adjusted position whensaid adjusting member is rotated, and means for locking the adjusting member in adjusted position.
3. A friction device for a picker stick check of the type including a flexible looped strap supported beneath the lay and within which the picker stick oscillates, said device including a bracket fixed to the lay and having a depending friction finger adapted to'engage the inner face of said strap, a supporting member adjustably secured to said bracket and having a depending friction finger adapted to engage said strap, and a transverse slot, an adjusting and clamping member having a threaded portion extending through an opening in said bracket and having an integrally formed eccentric fitting into said slot to move said supporting member into adjusted position when said adjusting member is rotated, and a locking and clamping nut cooperating with said threaded portion to secure the adjusting member in adjusted position.
4. A friction device for a picker stick check of th type including a flexible looped strap sup ported beneath the lay and within which the picker stick oscillates, said device including a bracket fixed to the lay and having a depending friction finger adapted to engage the inner face of said strap, a supporting member adjustably secured to said bracket and having a depending friction finger adapted to engage said strap, and a transverse slot, a rotatable adjusting member mounted in said bracket and having an eccentric formed on its lower end and fitting into said transverse slot to move said bracket forwardly and rearwardly into adjusted position When said adjusting member is rotated, and a nut for securing the adjusting member in adjusted position.
5. A friction device for a picker stick check of the type including a flexible looped strap supported beneath the lay and. within which the picker stick oscillates, said device including a bracket fixed to the lay and having a depending friction finger adapted to engage the inner face of said strap, a supporting member adjustably secured to said bracket and having a depending friction finger for engaging said strap and a transverse slot, a rotatable adjusting member mounted in said bracket and having an eccentric formed on its lower end and fitting into said transverse slotto move said supporting member forwardly and rearwardly into adjusted position when said adjusting member is rotated, and a nut for securing the adjusting member in adjusted position.
6. A friction device for a picker stick check of the type including a flexible looped strap supported beneath the lay and within which the picker stick oscillates, means secured to the lay for supporting the strap, a bracket attached to the front of the lay and having a depending friction finger for engaging the inner surface of the strap, said bracket having a forwardly extending portion, a member detachably secured to said bracket and having a depending friction finger for engaging the outer surface of said strap,
said member having a transverse'slot and a forwardly and rearwardly extending slot, an adjusting member having a threaded upper end extending through an opening in the forward portion of said bracket and through said forwardly and rearwardly extending slot in said member, said adjusting member having an eccentric at its lower end fitting into said transverse slot to cause forward and rearward movement of said adjusting member into adjusted position, and means for locking said adjusting member in adjusted position,
7. A friction device for a picker stick check of the type including a flexible looped strap supported beneath the lay and within which the picker stick oscillates, means secured to the lay for supporting the strap, a bracket attached to the front of the lay and having a depending friction finger for engaging the inner surface'of the strap, said bracket having a forwardly extending portion, a member detachably secured to said bracket and having a depending friction finger for engaging the inner surface of said strap, said member having a transverse slot and a forwardly and rearwardly extending slot, an adjusting member having a threaded upper end extending through anopening in the forward portion of said bracket and through said forwardly and rearwardly extending slot in said member, said adjustment member having an eccentric at its lower end fitting into said transverse slot to cause forward and rearward move ment of said member into adjusted position, and means for locking said adjusting member in adjusted position.
