An additional object is to provide a fclding box used in dispensing paper, a resilient flap extension acting in the capacity of friction means for holding a roll of paper in the box against accidental rotation, and also as means for supporting a member having a serrated edge used in cutting or tearing the difierent lengths of paper desired.

Figure 1 is a top plan view of a folding box disclosing an embodiment of the invention, the same being shown filled with a roll of paper ready to be dispensed.

Figure 3 is a plan view of a blank of the box shown in Figures 1 and 2, the same being on a reduced scale.
Referring to the accompanying drawing by numerals, 1 indicates the bottom of the box, 2 what may be termed the rear, and 3 the front wall. The rear wall 2 merges into a top or cover 4 having a depending flap 5 to be inserted as illustrated in Figure 2. Folding end members 6 and '7 are provided which coact with the walls 1 to 4 inclusive to complete the box. The structure so far described is old and well known and forms no part of the present invention except in combination.
The box is designed to carry a roll of paper 8 which is .to be dispensed in any desired lengths. This paper is coiled on a core 9 which is illustrated as a hollow tube. One of the new features is the flap 10 which extends from the upper edge of the front wall 3, the same being of the same width as the wall and when inserted into the box will press against the paper roll 8 by reason of the resilient action of the material as the flap 10 is integral with the wall 3 and is merely bent at 11. This causes the flap 10 to act as a resilient or spring friction member to resist accidental rotation of the roll 8 and to prevent the v paper from loosening up on core 8. The flap 5 is cut away at 12' and the top 4 has a tongue 13 cut therefrom on three sides so that the tongue may normally fill the opening 14, but when it is desired to remove a quantity of paper the thumb or finger may press the tongue 13 downwardly and 60 then press against the paper 8 at point 15. By maintaining the pressure and pulling upwardly with the thumb some of the paper will be pulled outwardly, the same passing from the roll 8 between the flaps 5 and 10 which act as a guide therefor. A cutting member 16 is secured to the flap 10 by adhesive or other desired means and projects preferably a short distance above the bend 11. The cutting member 16 may be metal, celluloid, or any other desired material and may Z0 have a straight solid edge or may be serrated as illustrated in Figure 3.
After the desired quantity of paper has been pulled from the box, it is bent down until it is almost parallel withthe wall 3 and then pulled 7 slightly on an angle, whereupon it will be torn along the serrated edge 17. This will leave a portion to be grasped by the thumb at point 15 when some additional paper is to be removed. The paper may be bent along the line 11, or, if desired, may be scored and then bent according to the thickness of the material used.
The flap 10 is suspended within the box and acts as a tension device to stop the roll 8 from unraveling when in transit, or at any other time, and keeps the paper substantially taut so that when it is pressed against the edge 17 a line clean cut will result. When there is nothing in the box, the flap 10 has a natural tendency to assume an angle of about degrees from the wall 3, 90 but when filled the roll 8 is inserted into the box and the flap 10 is pushed over until it assumes an angle of about 15 degrees. This angle may be varied by increasing or decreasing the width of the box.
When the device is in ordinary use in the home or elsewhere the parts are arranged as shown in Figure 2. When the box is to be shipped in quantities, it is arranged flat as shown in Figure 3. When the box is folded into an operable shape the cover 4 is left open and the roll 8 is inserted after which the cover is moved to a closed position and the flap 5 inserted, as shown in Figure 2. Boxes filled in this manner may be shipped, if desired, as usually the box and roll 8 are sold as a unit after having been arranged as shown in Figure 2.
I claim:-
1. A folding box for vending paper from a roll comprising a box structure having folding end flaps, bottom, an inwardly extending tension flap positioned to overlap interiorly part of the front wall of the box falling short of the roll in the box, said top and tension flap being notched for the insertion of the thumb or finger of the person when withdrawing paper from said roll, and a roll retaining flap integral with the front wall of the box extending into the box and at an angle to said front wall but substantially parallel to the flap on top of the box, said roll retaining flap extending beyond said tension flap and bearing against the roll in the box for resisting rotation thereof and means acting as a cutting member having the edge projecting slightly above the juncture of said roll retaining flap and said front wall the material of said roll being adapted to be pulled out between said flaps and past said cutting member.
