IMPROVEMENT IN LAN' I'ERNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 196,885, dated November 6, 1877 application filed October 8, 1877'.
v To all whom it may concern:
of Newport, Campbell county, Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lanterns, of which the following is a specification: A
My invention relates to' certain improvements in the class of lanterns of which that described and represented in my Patent No. 167,651, granted September 14, 1875, is a type; and said improvements comprise a stationary guard or fender attached rigidly to the base or body, and extending upward around the globe to about the middle of its bulge, to which fender,v instead of to the base itself, my pair of guard-wires are pivoted.
My improvements, in a more complete form, further comprise a pair of lugs or teats cast or molded upon the outside of the globe near its top, which teats serve as stops to limit the descent of the dome, and which may, by a slight shift of the globe about its axis, become available as a locking device to more effectually prevent the accidental unshipment of the dome from a loosely-fitting globe. In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of a lantern embodying all my improvements except the screw-rod and nut, the dome being shown in its locked position. Fig. 2 is a side view taken at right angles to Fig. 1, and showing the dome in its released position. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the dome with my rod and nut.
The base A, dome E, and my pair of vertical guard-wires G may be substantially the- I same as in my aforesaid patent, except that in my present improvement, the pair of guardwires, instead of being continued to the base or body, and pivoted directly thereto, are hinged or pivoted to a fender, O, which, being permanently and rigidly secured to the base or body A, extends outward and upward in bowl form, so as to protect the globe all around, instead of on onlytwo opposite sides, as is the case in my said patent.
My globe -D maybe of the common bulbous form shown in my aforesaid patent, but is preferably molded with two diametrically-opposed external teats, d, near its top, so as to constitute a definite stop to the closure of the dome upon the globe.
The said lugs may also be utilized as lock-.
with globes of diverse lengths, and with guards of less or greater elasticity by adding a rod,
H, which, being at its lower extremity looped around that part of the wireG which traverses the dome, (see Fig. 3,) is carried upward through an orifice, e, in thecrown of the dome and tapped into anut, I, which, being turned to the right or to the left, tightens or slackens the dome upon the globe.
For the form Fig. 3, the holes in the dome for the guard-wires G may be vertical slots 0, to facilitate the adjustment above stated.
For the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, as well as for that employing aplain globe, the two sides of the guard, instead of being a single wire, may consist of two distinct wires having their upper ends loosely riveted on the I inner sides of the dome-wall, and having a riveted hinge attachment to the fender. i
This arrangement, while retaining the advantages and functions of the spring lockingguard of my said patent, presents the additional advantage of a guard or fender, which completely protects the globe on all sides; in other words, a permanent fender is provided, which, in conjunction with the hinged upper guard-wires, enables the removal or replacement of the globe with even greater facility than in my said patent, and combines therewith the complete protection of the globe while in use.
I- claim as new and of my invention 1. The combination ofbase orbodyA,rigidlyattached cage or fender G, hinged guard-wires G, and removable top or dome E, substantially as set forth.
2. The perpendicular guards G of alantern, made with hinged joints between the dome E and base or body A, to enable the removal of the globe, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with the removable top or dome E, of the teats'd upon the globe D, substantially as set forth.
