The invention relates to improvements in fountain pens and has for its primary object the provision of an improved fountain pen equipped with improved means for lling the same with ink at a single operation.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a fountain pen of the character indicated so constructed and arranged as to be completely filled or supplied with ink at a single operation and of relatively short length. y
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which Fig. 1 is a longitudinal, vertical section, on an enlarged scale, of a fountain pen embodying the invention; and
Fig. 2 is a similar view thereof showing the parts in position preparatory to filling the same wthink.
The embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawing comprises a suitable barrel or hollow handle member 10 having an ink reservoir 11 therein and provided at one end With a suitable pen point 12 in operative relation therewith, as shown. At the pen point end, the barrel 10 is provided with the usual threads 13 for the reception of the usual protective cap member, not shown, for protecting the pen point 12 when not in use.
A suitable piston 14 is arranged to operate in the barrel 10, being carried by a reciprocating piston rod 15 reciprocating freely through a socket member 16 inserted in the upper end of the barrel 10, as indicated. The socket member 16 has threaded engagement 17 with the upper end of the barrel 10 and is also equipped with an annular shoulder 18 resting against said barrel end as indicated. The upper end of the socket member 16 protrudes from the upper end of the barrel member 10, but it will be noted that the said socket member extends into the barrel member a distance materially greater than the distance it protrudes therefrom.
At its upper end the piston rod 15 is provided with a head or button 19 and a compression spring 20 is arranged as shown around the piston rod 15 within and protruding from the socket member 16. A suitable removable protective cap 21 is arranged as shown to enclose and protect the protruding end of the piston rod 15, having threaded engagement 22 with the socket member 16. It will be noted that the piston rod 15 protrudes from the upper end of the socket member 16 a distance substantially equal to the extent of the travel of the piston 14 Within the barrel 10, and the socket member 16 is of suiiicient depth (Cl. 1Z0-47) to accommodate completely the spring 20 when compressed as indicated in Fig. 2.
In use, when it is desired to fill the reservoir 11 with ink, the cap 21 is removed, the button 19 depressed until it contacts with the end of the socket member 16, and the pen point 12 then immerced in the ink. The button 19 is then released, the spring 20 causing the piston 14 to rise in the reservoir 11, thus sucking the ink upwardly into said reservoir and completely filling said reservoir ina single operation or manipulation of the button 19.
By means of thev specific arrangement disclosed, a fountain pen relatively short in length and of relatively great ink carrying capacity can "5 be provided which may be filled with a single manipulation of the button 19, and which is enicient in operation and capable of economical manufacture. The specific details disclosed constitute simple and effective means for the purpose.
While 1 have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification. without departing from the spirit ofthe invention. I, therefore, do not Wish to be limited to the precise details disclosed, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claim. I claim:
A fountain pen comprising a barrel provided with a reservoir and having a pen point at one end, a socket element inserted in the opposite end and having an annular shoulder resting against the end of said barrel, said shoulder defining upper and lower sections, the upper section protruding from the upper end of said barrel and the lower section extending into the barrel a distance greater than it protrudes therefrom, a piston operating in said barrel, a piston rod connected 100 with said piston and extending through said socket element and protruding therefrom a distance substantially equal to the effective length of said reservoir, and a compression spring located within the socket element and surrounding said pis- 105 ton rod, said spring normally protruding from the end of the socket element and the depth of the socket element being sufficient to accommodate the protruding portion of the spring when in compressed state.
