The invention relates to improvements in foun-. tain'pens and has for its .primary object the provision of an improvedfountain pen which is capable of economical manufacture and highly erlicient in use.
Another object of the invention is the provision of an improved fountain pen having improved means provided therein for iilling the same with ink and retaining said ink therein.
Other objects will appear hereinafter. The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
'Ihe invention will be best understood by ref- -erence to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which Fig. l is aV longitudinal section of a fountain pen embodying the invention;

Fig. 3 a longitudinal section of a modified form of construction; and
Fig. 4 an enlarged transverse section taken substantially on line 4 4: of Fig. 3.
The embodiment of the invention illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 comprises a barrel 10, preferably made of any of the yusual non-metallic materials employed for the purpose, and having the usual ink chamber therein. At one end the barrel 10 is equipped with the usual pen point 11 in open cornmunication with the ink chamber of the barrel.
The other end of the barrel 10 is closed by means of a head 12, preferably of the same material as the barrel 10, and threaded therein as shown. The head 12 is provided with a piston chamber 13 fitting snugly into the ink chamber of the barrel and provided at its inner or bottom` tube or sleeve 16 of acid resisting metal, thereby providing a smooth and uniform inner surface for the piston chamber l3`whichwill not materially distort under ordinary conditions ofuse.
The head l2 is also provided with a protruding extension 17 having an open-ended socket 18 therein. The piston 19 operates freely in the piston chamber 13 and is provided with a piston rod 20 extending through the socket 18 and equipped at its outer or upper end with an enlarged plunger head 2l snugly fitting and operating in the socket 18. A compression spring 22 is imprisoned in the socket 18 as shown. The extension 17 and plunger 21 are enclosed and protected by means of a cap 23 threaded at 24 on the head 12. Additional (Cl. 1Z0-47) threads 25 are also provided on `the barrel 10 for the reception of an outer cap used for the protecting of the pen point l1 (not shown).
As shown, the piston chamber 13 extends into the ink chamber of the barrel 10 about half-way of the length thereof the bottom 14 of thepiston chamber thus constituting a partition dividing oi a lower ink compartment 26` in the barrel l0. A tube 27 extends through the bottonrllof the piston chamber 13 to the lower portion of the compartment26, said tube being provided with perforations 28 adjacent its top gandbottom as shown.
In use and in operation, when it is desiredto fill the pen with ink, the point thereof is immersed in the ink in the usual way and the plunger2l depressed and released several times. The first depression of the plunger 21 will expel air from the barrel 10 so that when the piston 19 is released, ink will be drawn into said barrel. Some of this ink will remain in the lower compartment 26 but a good portion thereof will ascend into the piston chamber 13. Upon the next depression of thepiston 19 the ink in the chamber 13 will be expelled therefrom, some of it passing into the compartment 26 and some of it passingoutwardly through the pen point 11. Upon the next upward stroke of the piston 19 ink will be again drawn into the compartment 26 and the piston chamber 13 very nearly, if not entirely, lling both. Another stroke of the piston 19 will completely fill both piston chamber 13` and compartment 26.` When it is desired to` expel the ink for v any reason, repeated strokes of the piston 19 will accomplish this. The perforations 15 and 28 facilitate the transference of the ink as above outlined. p
By `this arrangement it will benoted that a fountain `pen is` providedhaving two ink chaml bers, thus affording a larger ink capacity. 1 The separation of the ink chamber of the pen into two distinct compartments affords great ink capacity and at the same time lessens the weightof the bulk of the chamber indirect communication with the pen point. By making one l complete stroke of the piston a downward stroke thereof with the pen point immersed in the ink and then removing the pen point from the ink and releasing the plunger, the lower compartment only will be supplied with ink, thus lessening chances of leakage, or bleeding of the ink.
The use of the metallic lining for the piston chamber insures a tight tting of the piston therein at all times, thereby insuring eicient operation in lling the pen and also preventing leakage or bleeding of the ink therefrom in the pocket of the user.
In the modification illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4, the piston .chamber 13 is omitted from the head 12 and the piston 19 operated in an ink chamber extending the full operative length of the barrel 10 and lined throughout with a metallic sleeve or tube16. As Will be noted, the eiective stroke of the piston 19 is substantially the rfull effec-tive length of the ink chamber so that one stroke of the .plunger will be sufficient `to completely: ll the ink chamber. The use of the metallic lining for the ink chamber insuresJ proper t for the pistonat all times, thereby facilitating lling of the pen and also preventing; leakage.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred forms of construction for carrying my in-v vention into eiect, these arecapable of variation and modification Without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to'be limited to 4thegprecise details disclosed, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as fallwithin the scope of the appendedv claims.

A fountain pen comprising a barrel having an ink chamber therein; a pen point at one end of said barrel in communication with said chamber; a partition dividing4 said chamber into two compartments; a piston operating in vthe'upperl compartment; and a tube extending throughsaid partition to the bottom portion of the lower compartment.
