Description

J. HEBERLING. Napkin Ring and Holder.
No. 196,665. Patented Oct. 30, 1877.
26 NV [\ITOR ATTORN EYS WITNESS s a2m% QM N.PEI'ER5. PNDTU-LiTHOGRAFNER. WASHINGTOM D C UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN HEBERLING, OF IOWA CITY, IOWA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO GEORG WILHELM MARQUARDT, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN NAPKIN RINGS AND HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 196,665, dated October 30, 1877; application filed September 27, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN HEBERLING,.Of
' Iowa City, in the county of Johnson, and in the State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Napkin Rings and Holders; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in a device to suspend a napkin from the collar or other neck-wear of a person, and also to form a neat and convenient holder or ring for the napkin when folded in the ordinary manner, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows my invention applied on a person as a napkin-holder. Fig. 2 shows the device open. Fig. 3,is a section of the same, showing it closed.
My combined napkin ring and holder consists of two or more segments, A and B, of a band or ring, hinged together at a, and clasped by means of a spring-clasp, C, in such manner as to form a circular or oval holder, similar in appearance to, and answering every purpose of,
the ordinary napkin-ring. The clasp O, that holds the ring together on one side, also answers for one of the legs or supports to hold the ring in position when resting on the table, 0 being the other leg or support, made to correspond in shape with the clasp G. I
When unclasped, said clasp 0 forms a con-' venient hook for suspending the device from 5 the collar or other neck-wear of a person.
This napkin ring and supporter is also provided with a flat spring, D, which fits closely on the inside of the part A. It is attached rigidly near the clasp G, and the other end extends beyond the hinge a, so that when the ring is opened in the manner in which it is to be used as a pendant from the neck, the end of the spring can be conveniently pulled back and the edge of the napkin inserted under it.
Near the hinge a, on the inside of the seg ment A, is a stud or knob, b, which passes through a hole in the spring, and when the napkin is inserted under the spring this prevents it from slipping loose.
The hook that suspends the ring and holder from the collar may be hinged, so as to turn in and lie flat on the inside when not in use.
When used as a pendant from the neck the upper convex portion stands out over a ladys breastpin or bow, or a' gentlemans neck-tie,
much better than the ordinary napkin-sup porter.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A napkin-ring made in sections, hinged together, and provided with a hook or catch, 0, for suspending it from the collar or other neck-wear of a person.
2. The combination of the parts A B, hinged together, and provided with the projection O, hook projection O, and the interior spring D, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 3d day of September, 187 7.
JOHN HEBERLING. ,NVitnesses GEO. W. BALL, G. W. MARQUARDT.
