Description

A. H. DEAN. Automatic Smoking Advertising-Device.
No. 196,639. Patented Oct. 30,1877.
WITNESS ES INVENTOR 9% Aileriffflemv,
ATTORN EYS.
MPETERS, PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER, WASHNGTDN, D c
' sna n amnrwmieenanr Letters Patent 7 To all whom it may concern: 3 ,Be it known that I, ALBERT H. DEAN, of Bridgeport, in the countyof Fairfield, and in ;.tl 1e State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Mechanical Smoking Advertising Devices; and dohereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of an automatic and use the same, 1 will now proceed todescribe ts construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side ,elevation, partlyin section, of my automatic smoker. Figs. 2 and 3 are detached views, showing parts ofthe op erating mechanism.
A represents a suitablebox forming the base of the machine, and on .top thereof is a chair or seat, B, on which a figure is seated; .G is
the body of said figure, D the head, and E one arm thereof. 1 Within the box A is a sta tionary frame, G, containing an ordinary'clockwork, 11. Onthe last shaft of. the trainin this clock-work is secured a cam-arm, I, which is, by a rod or pitman, a, connected with a bent bar, J, moving in. suitable guides on the frame A. To one end of theybar J is attached a piston-rod, 1), connecting {with a piston, L, within a cylinder, K. From the other end of this cylinder extends 'a tube, 0?, up through the top of the box, the seat, and} the body 0 of the figure. On the upperendof the tube 61 is placed a smaller tube, 6, which is attached to the head D, and formsthepivot upon which or by which the head is moved to one side. The tube e is bent within the head so that its end will be between the-lips of the face.
The arm E is pivoted to the body 0 -by a ivofieciea 10, ,1877.
otaiiei so, raj a jipiaaan niecrod 0 sh'aft,j7'*, passing into the 'body, and on the inner end of said rod or shaft is secured a three-armed lever, h. The middle arm of this lever extends downward, is slotted longitudinally, and fits over a pin, 73, projecting from the tube 0. One of the side arms of the lever h is connected by a spiral spring, k, with the body 0, and from the other side arm a rod or wire, m, extends down into the box A, and is connected to an arm, P, pivoted to the frame G in such a position that it can be operated by the rotating cam-arm I.
' The arm E of the figure carries in its hand a tubular cigar-holder, R, to hold the cigar or cigarette.
The clock-work H being wound up, the camarm 1, during its revolution, first moves the bar J so as to draw the piston Lto the closed end of the cylinder K. During this movement of the piston the arm E holds the end of the cigar-holder between the lips of the head, either within or close up against the end of the tube-e, so that by the suction of the piston the smoke will be drawn into the tubes 0 -01 and cylinder K. When the piston has completed its stroke, and about the same time as it commences its return stroke, the cam-arm I strikes the pivoted arm P, turning the same a certain distance on its pivot. This movement of the arm P, by means of the rod or wire m and three-armed lever h, moves the arm E away from the mouth of the figure, and also, by means of the pin iand tube 0, turns the head D to one side. At the same time the pis ton L forces the smoke out through the mouth of the figure.
As the cam-arm I continues to rotate, the pivoted arm P moves upward again by the action of the spring k on the lever h, said lever returning the head and arm of the figure to their former positions, so that when the piston has completed its return stroke and is ready to commence a new stroke, the end of the cigar-holder will be within the mouth of the figure.
In place of the cylinder and piston I may use bellows or similar mechanical means for drawing in and expelling the smoke.
Having thus fully described my invention,
whatjIclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- r 1. The combination, 1n an automatic smoker,
of the figure C, movable head D, with tubular pivot 6, having projecting pin '5, the movable armE, with pivot f, the three-armed lever h, spring 70, and a clock mechanism connected with said lever, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
.2.j"l he combination, in an automatic smoker, of the figure C, movable head D, with tubular pivot e, the tube d, cylinder K, and the piston L, connected to and operated by a clock mech,
anism, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
3. The combination, in an automatic smoker, of;, a clock-work, H, rotating camarm I, pivoted arm I, connecting viremz and threearm'ed lever -h, for simultaneously operating the movable head and movable arm" of the figure, substantially as herein set forth.
4. The combination, in an automatic smoker, of a clock-work, H, rotating; cam-arm I, the pitman a, and reciprocatingbar J, "for operating the piston L, and the pivoted bar 1?, for
operating the movable head and arm of the figure, substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony that I clainfith"- foregoing h have hereunto set my hand this 16th day of July, 1877.
' ALBERT 'H." DEAN.
