SMOKING DEVICE.
T o all whom fit may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY E. CoA'rEs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Sacramento, in the county of Sacramento and State of California, have invented a new and Improved Smoking Device, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved smoking device, more especially designed for use as an advertising medium in cigar stores and other places, and arranged to simulate a person in the act of smoking a cigar, cigarette, pipe or other smokers article.
For the purpose mentioned, use is made of a hollow figure, simulating a smoker, and
mounted on a chair or other support, the
mouth of the figure being connected at the inside with a valved discharge pipe leading from a smoke box connected with a suction holder for a cigar, cigarette or a like smokers article, a cylinder connected with the smoke box and containing a piston, an actuating mechanism adapted to be driven by hand or by power and connected with the piston rod of the said piston, so that the smokers article is gradually burned and the smoke is discharged through the mouth of the ligure. Use is also made of a smokescattering device for scattering the smoke arising from the burning end of the cigar, cigarette or other smokers article, and in order to simulate smoking by the figure, the hand of` one forearm carries an imitation cigar, cigarette or a like smokers article, and the forearm is movable, and is connected with the said actuating mechanism so that the imitation smokers article is carried to and from the mouth of the figure in unison with the action of the piston in the cylinder.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in
which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a side elevation of the smoking device, parts being shown in section; Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the operating mechanism; Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view of the smoking device on the line 3 3 of Fig. l; Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the holder for the cigar, cigarette or other Specification of Letters Patent.

smokers article, and shown disconnected from the suction pipe. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a modified form of the smoking device; and Fig. 6 is la perspective view of the actuating mechanism for the second nonsmoking figure shown in Fig. 5.
The smoking device illustrated in Figs. l, 2, 3 and 4, is mounted on a suitably constructed support A, the lower portion of which is in the form of a box having a door A at the rear, and the upper portion appearing as a vchair on which is seated the figure B of a person, having a hollow body, and provided with an articulated forearm B, carrying in its hand a cigar, cigarette or other smokers article B2. The forearm B is arranged to swing up and down, ,and the smokers article B2 is adapted to register with the open mouth B3 of the figure B at the time the forearm B is in its uppermost position.v A smoke delivery pipe C extends within the hollow body of thel ligure B and terminates at the mouth B3. and the lower end of the said pipe C extends down into the support A and connects with a valved discharge or outlet D arranged on the top of a smoke box D, provided at its bottom with a valved suction inlet D2, ,connected with one end of an elbow E, provided at its other end with a flaring or a funnel-shaped mouth E', as plainly indicated in Figs. 1 and 4. The mouth F/ serves as a guide for inserting the stem F into the end of the elbow E, the stem F projecting from a holder F adapted to carry a cigar, cigarette or similar article G, of tobacco, adapted to be ignited at the outer end and smoked, on producing a suction action in the smoke box D. The holder F is provided with a bar F2 for conveniently inserting the stem F into the elbow E or removing it therefrom, the said bar F2 extending approximately parallel to the axis of the holder F, and the bar being preferably of a length somewhat in excess of that of the article G, to permit of conveniently taking hold of the bar F2 for inserting or removing the holder F from the elbow E.
The top of the smoke box D is connected with the lower end of a cylinder I-I, in which reciprocates a piston I, having a piston rod I connected by a pitman J with a crank disk K held on the shaft K', journaled in the hollow body of the ligure B, and on the shaft K is a second crank disk K2 connected by a pitman L .with the articulated arm B, so as to impart an up and down swinging motion to the saine at the time a reciprocating motion is given to the piston I in the cylinder H; that is, the arm. B swings downward on the downward movement of the piston I and swings upward on the upward movement of the said piston.
The crank disk K2 is preferably provided at its peripheral face with teeth K2, in mesh with a pinion N secured on the shaft N journaled in suitable bearings arranged in the hollow body of the figure B. On the shaft N is secured a' pulley N2 over which passes a belt N3 also passing over a pulley N2 secured on the shaft- O of a motor O, of any approved construction; that is, the motor may be a spring motor, an electric motor, or the like. The shaft O may also be rotated by hand, if desired, by the use of a crank arm or other device applied to the shaft. Now when the motor O is running a rotary motion is transmitted to the shaft N which by the pinion N and the gear teeth K2 of the disk K2 rotates the shaft so that the two disks K and K2 and their pitmen J and L impart simultaneously a reciprocating motion to the piston I and a swinging motion to the arm B. During the upstroke of the piston I, a suction action is produced in the cylinder H, and the smoke box D, the elbow E and the holder F, to cause the cigar, cigarette or a like article G to burn and to draw the smoke into the smoke boX D. On the downward stroke of the piston I the smoke is forced out of the cylinder H and through the valved outlet D into and up through the smoke pipe C, so that the smoke finally issues through the mouth B3 of the disk B at thetime the arm B swings downward. Vithin the support A is arranged a fan P carrying on its shaft P a pulley Q connected by a belt Q. with a pulley Q2 secured on the motor shaft O, so that when the motor is running and the article G is burning then the fan P is rotated to scatter the smoke arising from the burning end of the article G, the scattered smoke readily passing out through crevices in the support A, but in such a scattered condition that it will not be noticeable.
From the foregoing it will be seen that by the arrangement described the smoking device when in use simulates a person in the actof smoking a cigar, cigarette, pipe or other smokers article, as the smoke is blown intermittently through the mouth of the figure B and at the time the arm B is on a downward swinging motion. then the arm B swings upward the issuing of the smoke through the mouth B3 ceases, and when the arm B reaches an uppermost position, then the end of the-imitation cigar,
cigarette or like article G registers with the mouth B3, thus simulating a draw on the article B2 by the ligure B thereby adding to the simulation of a person in the. act of smoking.
By the use of the door A ready access is had to the holder F for removing or replacing the same in the elbow E and for lighting the cigar or cigarette G.
In the modified form shown in Figs. 5
and G, use is made of an additional nonsmoking ligure R mounted. on the support A adjacent to the smoking figure B, which is identical in operation as above described in reference to Figs. l, 2, 3 and 4l.
The ligure B has a turnable head It which is periodically turned by a suitable device, preferably one that is actuated from the mechanism connected with the smoking ligure B. As shown in Figs. 5 and (3,` use is preferably inade'of the crank disk K, which by its crank pin K imparts an intermittent swinging motion to an arm S fulcruined at S with the ligure B and normally resting on a stop pin S2. The arm S is connected with one end of a cord T eX- tending downwardly within the ligure B and the support A to pass through an eye T and then extend horizontally within the support A to linally connect with an arm U held on a vertical shaft U journaled within the support A and the hollow figure It, the upper end of the shaft U carrying the head It. A spring U2 presses the arm U to return the a-rm and its shaft to normal posi tion, it being understood that when the arm S is swung upward a pull is exerted on the cord T to turn the shaft U and the head R, and when the arm S is released by the wrist pin T then the arm S swings downward and the cord T, shaft U and head R are returned to normal position by the spring U2.
By the addition of the second non-smoking figure it is intended to express the contrast between the qualities of a good and a bad cigar.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
