Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
SAMUELYH. EMANU-EL, OE GLOUCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
Y IMPROVEMENT INCOMBINED OVERALLS AND JUMPER.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 196,571, dated October 30, 1877; application filed August 24, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, vSAMUEL H. EMANUEL, of Gloucester, county of Essex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and I1nproved Overalls and Jumper, of which the following is a specication:
Figure l represents a back view of my improved garment. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the pocket.
The invention relates tc\an improvement upon the combined overalls and jumper for which Letters Patent No. 193,149 were granted to me July 17,1877.
In the drawing, Ais the jumper, and B the overalls, both of which are made without side seams. The material forming the front of the garment is entire lfrom the shoulders to the feet, but without transverse seams. The back is divided across the waist from c to b, and a ilap, G, is formed in the overalls, which is supported by three elastic straps, c, which are attached to the inner side of the jumper, a short distance above its lower edge. These straps are detachably connected to the ilap G by means of buttons sewed to the edge of the latter.
A band, a, is sewed to the jumper around the waist, and, being secured at its upper edge only, it covers the upper edge of the flap O, as well as the lower ends of the straps c. It likewise gives the garment the appearance of being composed of two separateparts-namely, overalls and jumper.
The elastic strapsV relieve the back of the garment of undue strain and render it easyto the wearer, and also allow the ilap O to be conveniently opened when required, since the buttoned ends of the straps are easily accessible. By attaching the straps in the manner shown, the lower edge of the jumper hangs loose and free over the iiap C, and the edge of the latter is also supported and prevented from sagging.
Pockets D are formed by attaching (sewing) a piece, E, of canvas or other fabric directly to the inside of the front portion of the overalls or pants B, thus dispensing with one of the pieces of fabric usually employed in constructing pockets.
Buttons c are sewed to the inner portion of the pocket, and the sides oi' the iiap C are provided with button-holes for receiving the buttons c. The outer band of the pocket is also provided with button-holes for receiving the buttons c. By means of this arrangement the flap is fastened at its sides, and the pocket may be closed when required.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The improved garment formed of overalls and jumper, made without side seams and divided across the Waist, the elastic straps c, attached at some distance from the lower edge ofthe jumper, and the ilap C, having buttons located at its edge, and the waist band E', all combined, constructed, and arranged as shown and described.
SAMUEL H. EMANUEL.
