. Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 196,555, dated October 30, 1877; application filed September 29, 1877'.
To all whom it may conce/m:
Be it known thatI, EDGARK BEr'rs, of Lansingburg, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Ouf, of 4which the followingv is a specification:4
y In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a rear view, and Fig. 2 a front view, of
my improved culi', Fig. 3, a front view of a cuil' with light .centerfband, partly turned up to show the re-enforcing end; and Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse section o f the cuff on enlarged scale, taken on line c c, Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. 1
The object of this invention is to so im- `prove the construction of cuffs that the disagreeable and unsightly opening or gaping of one or both edges of the cuiis lat present in use is fully avoided, and a neater and more perfect cuil'l obtained, and also, incase of being made `with lighter center parts, the buttonholes are strengthened sufiiciently to hold out as long as the cuffs.
cuffs with lighter center-bands, and of folding the extensions back to the inside, so as to reenforce the button-holes of the center-band.
ByV referring to the drawing, A represents a detachable cuff, that is made of the customary face part a, a back part, b, and intermediate layers d.
The back part 'b is cut sufficiently narrower than the other parts, so that when the parts are sewed together at one side the seam may Y be formed at the other side by gathering up the longer parts, and sewing then the lback v `along the opposite side of the same. By turning, then, the cu. right side out at either one of the ends, and finishing the cuff by stitching all around, a superior 'bead is formed at both sides, as the fullness is taken up by the narrower back at the edges, and thereby the cuff prevented from gaping or opening at one or both edges, according as the cuff is constructed with one or two gaping edges.
In this manner a neat and superior bead is formed along the wearing edges of the cuff, that gives a better appearance to the same.
By extending the back part b of the cuff at the ends, and folding the pointed or triangular extension c back into the inside of the cuff, as shown in Fig. 3, a re-enforcing layer for the button-holes of cuffs made with lighter center parts is furnished, by which these cuffs are made more durable at the very points where they are weakest at present. The button-holes receive thereby stays of threefold thickness, while the remaining portion of the center part retains its two thicknesses of fabric, giving increased strength to the button-holes, without detriment to the yielding or elastic middle portion.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A detachable cuff, made with a back cut narrower than the remaining parts, sewed on both sides, and turned right side out to form beaded edges at both sides, and prevent the edges from gaping or opening, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
2. A detachable cuff with light center part, made with a back cnt narrower than the remaining parts, and extended at the ends, so that the parts, when sewed on both sides and turned right side out, form beaded edges at both sides, and the extensions folded inwardly will strengthen the button-holes of the center part without decreasing its pliability, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
