Description
L. B. RICHARDSON. Fences.
No. 196,251. Pai-ented oct. 16,1877.
ATTORN EY.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. 1
LUOIEN B. RICHARDSON, OF NORTH ENGLISH, IOWA.
Y 'IMPROVEMENT IN FENCES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 196,251, dated October 16, 1877; application filed August 18, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LUcrEN B. RICHARD- SON, of North English, in the comity of Iowa and State of Iowa, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Fences; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making' a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a perspective view of my fence. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a modification, and Fig. et is a detail thereof.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a portable fence, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The annexed drawing, to which reference is made, fully illustrates my invention.
Each panel of my fence is composed of a series of horizontal boards, A, connected at the ends and in the center by vertical boards B. At the ends the vertical boards B project beyond the ends of the horizontal boards, and at one end of each panel are fastened small cleats or pieces G C, forming, as it were, a groove with the end board B to receive the end of the adjacent panel, the parts being so arranged that the panels will stand at an angle, or, in other words, form a zigzag fence. The panels are locked together by a locking device coniposed of a horizontal bar, D, with two vertical bars, D D', fastened thereto. This locking device is so inserted that the bar D will be on the inside of the angle, and its ends rest upon one board A of each panel, while the bars Dl are on the outside, andhave their ends bearing against two of the boards A of each panel, as shown.
This forms a cheap, durable, and effective means for locking the fence-panels together, while at the same time it is easily and quickly applied and removed again, when required to take down the fence.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The lockin g device herein described, adapted to be applied to the two adjacent panels of a board fence having horizontal boards, consisting of the horizontal bar D, with the vertical bars D D attached thereto, each of the bars D embracing two adjacent horizontal boards of the fence, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
' LUCIEN B. RICHARDSON.
Witnesses: WM. M. BAKER, C. F. GosBY.
