Description

C. W. JENKINS. Reversible Plow-Point.
Patented Oct. 16, 1877'.
VENTOR v E WITNESSE f wrlwfi W ATTORNEYS N. PETERS, PHOTO-UTHDGRAPHER. WASHINGTON. D. C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES W. JENKINS, ()F RICHMOND, VIRGINIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN REVERSIBLE PLOW-POINTS.-
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 196,232, dated October 16, 1877; application filed August 30, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
the State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reversible Plow-Points; and do hereby declare. that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters ofreference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
My invention relates to that class of reversible plow-points which are provided with a tapering shank inserted in a socket in the plowshre; and the nature of my invention consists in providing the inner end of the plowpoint shank with a V-shaped mortised extension, fitting in a recess made in the inner end of the share'socket, and a pin or key passed through the parts to hold the point in place, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figurel is a perspective view of a plowshare with the point removed. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the point.
A represents a plowshare, and B is the point. This point is made wedge-shaped, so as to be reversible and used with either side up, and it is formed with a tapering shank, O, which is inserted in a socket, D, formed for that purpose in the share A. The sides of the shank O are made V-shaped, as shown at a a, and the sides of the socket D are correspondingly grooved. At the base of the shank the upper end of the plow-point is formed with V-shaped guides I) b, which fit into grooves made in the end of the plowshare, whereby the plow-point is held steady in the share.
The end of the shank U is formed with an eX- I tension, 0, of beveled form, having concave top and bottom sides, and through the same is a vertical mortise, (I. The extension 0 fits in a corresponding recess made in the inner end of the socket D, and a pin or nail or key, h, is passed through holes in the share, and through the mortise d in the shank-extension O, to hold'the point locked in place.
By the combination of the various bevels and corresponding grooves, as described, the point is held tightly and firmly. in the share.
I am fully aware of the patent (No. 165,7 03) granted to M. M. Bowers, July 20, 1875, and I do not claim the invention shown and described in said patent.
My invention differs in construction in several essential particulars, as pointed out in the claims hereinafter followin Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The plow-point B, having the shank 0, provided with the V-shaped extension 0, with concave top and bottom sides, and a mortise, 01, through it, in combination with the share A, having socket D, with recess at its inner end, and the pin or key h, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The combination of the plow-point B, provided with the shank 0, having beveled sides (1, guides b, and V-shaped mortised extension C, and the share A, having socket D, with inner recess and grooves, as described, and the lockin g pin or key h, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 15th day of August, 187 7 O. W. JENKINS. WVitnesses FRANK GALT, J. O. ScHRoEnnR.
