My invention relates generally to reading accessories, and particularly to an improved book mark arranged for novel association with a book.

It is an important object of my invention to provide a book mark involving a body member for insertion between the inner edges of the pages and the back of the binding of a book, and flexible members extending from the body member and arranged for placing between selected pages of the book, to mark a plurality of places in the book.

It is also an important object of my invention to provide a device of the character described wherein the body portion and the flexible members may be given any forms and appearances, according to the desire of the manufacturer and/or user.

, Other objects and advantages of my invention will be apparent from a reading of the following description in connection with the drawing, wherein for purposes of illustration I have shown a preferred embodiment of my invention.

As shown in this drawing, the device includes an elongated downwardly tapered major part 5, the handle part 8 and a number of flexible members 7 which are attached to the body at points spaced along the line defining the adjacent ends of the handle part and said major part.

The body or major portion 5 is preferably flat and narrow and tapered so as to be easily insertible in the back of the book 10 between the back '11 of the binding and the inward edges 12 of the pages. The body portion will be of a width suitable to the width of the book, and the length thereof will be determined usually by the length or height of the book with which the same is tobe used. The body portion 5 may be constructed of any suitable material either rigid or pliable, in either metal, fabricated material, wood, celluloid, and similar and other suitable materials. The body portion may be given any desired form consistent with a formation which is conveniently 5 adapted for insertion in the part of the book mentioned. The indicator or handle portion 8 may be of any suitable form such as a silhouette of a well known figure, or may take the form of or another representation of persons, animals, birds, or flowers, or various tokens, emblems, advertisements and the like at the option of the owner. Where the device is used in connection with borrowing library books the portion 8 may be utilized for exposing information in connection with the borrowing dates or other form of information or decoration may be incorporated in and applied to the portion 8.

6 and 7 may be pro vided in any desirable number and be attached to the body portion by passing through a pair or a greater number of properly spaced holes 9 at the end of the body portion 5. The flexible members 6 and '7 may be of different widths, colors, materials, and lengths, and have tassels, disks, or other decorative or indicative objects attached thereto, and advertisements, mottos and the like information may be printed or otherwise formed on the flexible members.

Although I have shown and described herein a preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be definitely understood that I do not desire to limit the application of the invention thereto, and any change or changes may be made in material and structure and arrangement of parts, within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the subjoined claim.

What is claimed is:

A book mark comprising an elongated flat body formed of a single piece of thin material and including a handle part at its upper end and an elongated downwardly tapered major part, said major portion being adapted to be placed in the space formed by the rear binding and inner edges of the leaves of a book, with the handle part projecting from the book and a number of flexible members attached to the body at points spaced along the line defining the adjacent ends of the handle part and said major part and extending from one side face of said body.
