Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 196,054, dated October 9, 1877; application filed April 28, 1877.

In the drawing, Arepresents acrayon made of chalk or other suitable material, and of any color, and of the usual shape, and otherwise all as ordinarily.
This crayon A, I surface exteriorly, and either for the whole or only that portion, B, of its length by which the crayon is handled in use,
with a liquid solution, by preference of gumtragacanth, although, as will hereinafter appear, other material may be used, by dipping the same in such a liquid solution, or applying the solution in any suitable manner, and afterward allowing it to dry upon the crayon.

As a new article of manufacture, a crayon having its exterior surface coated with a solution of gum-tragacanth or other similar mate rial, for preventing the crayon soiling the fingers, as herein set forth.
