Description

.NIoKoLAs SURGES, on BoRDEn'roWn, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT lN COMPOUNDS FOR FILLING THE PORES OF WOOD.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,653, dated May 14, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NIoKoLAs SURGES, of Bordentown, in thecounty of Burlington and .State of New "Jersey, have invented a new Compound for Filling Pores of Wood, which is composed of the following ingredients and materials:, y
Take of whitin two parts white soap-stone, one part; '5 rnt alum, one-half part; boiled linseed-oil, twoparts; J apan, two parts; and tggpentine, one part. Fill the above mixture with sufiicient turpentine to make it about the thicknessof ordinarypaint, then with a common brush apply the compound to the wood desired to be]varnisl1ed.- Where the wood is of solid grain one coat of this filler will be amply sufiicient, but where the grain is open two coats will sometimes be necessary. In a few moments after the filling is applied it will become dry, and then the wood is ready for rubbing or scraping, after which it is prepared to receive the varnish, one or two coats of which will make a more solid, durable, and
ornamental finish, and more easily and speed-f ily effected than by any other process now in;
use.
I do not claim any particular kind or composition of varnish to be used. Thatordinarily applied with the base or filler composed of the above ingredients will form a glossy and beantiful surface to the wood with a very trifling expense. Any ordinary coloring material can be used to suit the color'of the wood without detriment to the base or filling.
What Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isj The combination of the materials for filling pores of wood, as herein described, andfor the purpose set forth. in testimony whereo I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two sub-f scribing witnesses.
NIGKOLAS SURGES.
Witnesses:
JOHN O. RAUM, JOHN W. GRAY.
