IMPROVEMENT IN CORSETS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 196,020, dated October 9, 1877; application filed July 2, 1877.

To all whom it may concern: I Be it known that we, WALTER S. HUNT and CHARLES F. HUNT, both of the city and coiuity of Providence, and State of RhodeIsland, have invented new and useful Improvements in Corsets and we hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

The drawing represents our improved corset in view.

The invention consists in the novel arrangement of forming a corset of wire-gauze that will fit and sustain the body, conform to its configuration, be cool, pliable, and cheap.

In the drawing, a and a are halves of the body of the corset, made and formed out of metallic wire-gauze. The half a represents the wire-gauze diagonal with the center line, and a square with this line', as this body may be made with the wire of the gauze laid in either direction. I) b are the stays and clasps, secured to the wire-gauze body by sewing or in any other suitable manner. 0 o are the breastcups, strengthened at their intersection with the body by the bands (I d. E E are bands protecting the ends of the corset.

The corset is made of four or more parts, and any desired niunber of stays may be inserted. A sheet of wire-gauze, of the required size to form a certain portion of a corset, when forced 011 a suitable form, can be readily made to conform to the same, either by pressure or by bending the wire-gauze over the form. The meshes in those portions that are rounded out will readily spread, and in the depressions the meshes will narrow until the desired form is produced. The wire-gauze body so formed may be held in this form by securing the same to the stays by sewing or otherwise, or the soformed portion of the body may be tinned or plated, and thus the wire-gauze made to retain its form.

To preserve the shape where sudden e11- largements, such as breast or hip cups, are formed, the edges are secured by bands d d. Any desired form or configuration can thus be readily produced, and with properly-constructed forms corsets can be rapidly and cheaply made.

They are very pliable, and yet support the body perfectly. They require no washing; are durable and cooler than other corsets. They are more healthy to the wearer, as they are perfectly ventilated.

We are aware that corsets have been made in sections; and we are also aware that corsets made of wire-gauze and provided with a metallic binding are not new, and such we do not claim, broadly; but,

Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A corset made of four or more parts of wiregauze, formed to the proper shape, and united by the stays b I) and bands (I d, and provided with the binding E, substantially as and for the pin-pose described.
