IMPROVEMENT IN SEMICIRCULAR COMBS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 195,960, dated October 9, 1877; application filed June 4, 1875.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD WALL SMITH, of the city of Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Semicircular Combs and attachment thereto, of which the following is a specification:

Figure 1 is a side View of my improved semicircular comb and attachment, in which the same are shown in about the position which they assume when in use upon the wearers head. Fig. 2 is a view of the edge of said improved comb as the same appears when straightened out, and is given to represent the buttons hereinafter referred to. Fig. 3 is a plan view of my said improved attachment as the same appears when straightened out.

The object which my said invention is intended to accomplish is to furnish an improved semicircular comb with fixed or detachable band attachment, said attachment being intended for the keeping of the comb firmly upon the head, and the hair smooth, and from falling over the eyes when the wearer bends forward.

My said invention consists, first, of an ordinary semicircular comb with a button or knob projecting from or near each end thereof, or otherwise so formed as to permit a flexible or elastic band to be buttoned upon or attached thereto, said button or knob being substantially shown in Fig. 2 at B and, second, of a flexible or elastic band, substantially as shown in Fig. 3, made of some material other than that of which combs are usually made, and so formed as to be capable of adjustment to the ends of said semicircular comb, substantially as represented in Fig. 1.

A represents an ordinary semicircular comb herein referred to. 0 represents the flexible or elastic band herein referred to. The buttons or knobs may be of any proper shape or material, and the attachment may be ornamented or plain, and of any suitable material, except such as combs are usually made of, and so formed as to be capable either of per manent attachment to said ordinary semicircular comb, or of attachment thereto or detachment therefrom, at the wearers option.

In using my said improved semicircular comb and attachment, the semicircular comb alone may first be put on in the usual way, when the said attachment may be adjusted thereto, and drawn into a proper position for the accomplishment of the object above specified; or the said comb, with the said attachment already adjusted thereto, maybe put on, and said attachment drawn into place for the said purpose.

Having thus substantially described my said invention, what I claim as new, and dcsire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A semicircular comb, attached at its ends to the ends of a band, which is extensile and resilient, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
