Description

E. S. SCRIPTURE, OF NEW'V HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
WINDOW-FAsTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 19,588, dated March 9, 1858.
To aZZ whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIPHALET S. SCRIP- TURE, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, .have invented a new and useful Improvement in Window Fasteners or Locks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specication, in which- Figure 1 is a side sectional view of my improvement. Figs. 2, 3 and 4 are perspectives of the same. Fig. 5, is a perspective sketch of the model.
Therefore, I proceed to fully describe my invention. v
A represents the under half of a divided tube, or cylinder, provided with -half circle heads a, a, at, orv near each end, provided each with a central semicircle aperture.
B represents a small metallic piece having upon it a small projection or nipple, rising up from near its center as at b, which I denominate a vibrating tracer, the same being fitted for, and placed in, or near, the center and bottom of said lower half tube A in a recess provided for it.
C represents a piece of india rubber which I call a pillow block, and is placed between the forward head a, and the tracer block B.
D represents a piece of wood placed between the back head a, and the tracer block B, and is called the regulating block.
E represents a shaft, or bolt, the back end, (as at little 0,) representing a square, to receive a key, or crank, the opposite, or forward end is provided with a flange, represented at CZ, and is larger in its diameter than the bolt E, said flange representing about a quarter circle, and formed into anl abrupt incline plane, or wedge; about a half inch back of this flange d, commences a spiral groove, shown at e, commencing very abrupt, and as it recedes back, and around the bolt E it terminates at about two thirds of its circumference in a dead plane, or rather returning again toward the forward end, this bolt E, is placed in the half circles a a, at the same time resting upon and over the pillow block C, the regulating block D, and tracer'B, receiving in the groove e, the tracer nipple F y represents the upper half of the tube A which is provided with three half heads or partitions a a a, having in them corresponding semicircles to fit over bolt E, so Y that when placed over, and secured to the lower half tube A, it serves to conne all parts snugly together f f f f representing wings, with guide pin and hole g g, which serve to secure the half tubes together, and keep all from turning when in use.
G represents what I term a catch stud, which is to be properly, and firmly attached to the outer sash XI, said catch being provided with a hole through it, the upper part presenting a downward projecting flange L, which is in form-of a wedge, or abrupt plane, which corresponds with the quarter circle flange d, upon bolt E; when all being thus arranged, with the tube attached to, or inserted in the inner sash X as is shown in Fig..1 by then applying the key, or crank upon the square c, of bolt E, and turning to the right, the bolt E advances rapidly forward, until its quarter circle flange d, takes firmly behind the flange z, upon stud G, when the terminating' incline plane in the bolt groove e, commences to drive the tracer B b, forward against the rubber pillow block C, and hauling back upon the catch stud and flange Gr 7L, thereby drawing, and holding together the two sashes under the elastic pressure of india rubber pillow block C; which also serves, (by its yielding quality) -to compensate for any lit-tlc imperfection of work, or variations in space; the regulating block D, serves to hold the tracer B l), to its place, as well as to regulate its position in the recess of tube, -by diminishing or adding to its length, providing a cheap, and ready mode of regulating the pinch, or draft, upon the incline planes.
The advantages claimed for this rimprovement, are firstly its eXtreme simplicity, its small, compact and convenient form, its small cost, its ready adaptability, and strong, effective operation and security, drawing the window, both together, and downward, at the same time when the neck groove z', back of flange (Z, is made eccentric for the purpose. Secondly its being tubular, allowing it to be inserted within the sash, renders it much less liable to injury from external causes, and much less in the way in cleaning the windows. Thirdly its partaking of the character of a lock, from which the key may be removed, provides far more safety against roguish children, or criminal burglars. Fourthly it is a sovereign remedy for rattling Windows.
Having thus fully described the nature of my invention, and set forth its advantages, I will say that I am aware that bolts with spiral grooves formed in them, have been used before, for various purposes, I therefore do not claim such; but,
What I do claim as new, and desire to se- Cure by Letters Patent, is-
The vibrating tracer B b, (or in other words, small section of a screw nut allowed to be vibratory in its operation) in combination with the elastic pillow block C, the regulating block D, the bolt E, and the catch stud G, with their flanges and incline planes, all being secured in a two part tube,
'and all being arranged substantially in the manner, and for the purposes set forth.
