TO ALL WHOMIT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that` I, O. S. GARRETSON, of Buiiaiohn the county of Erie, andfStute of .New York, have linventada certain new and useful Improvement in Sash-Locks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a` full and exact, description thereof, reference being had 'to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specication.'V i' s Figure 1 is a. vertical cross-section of' themeetingrails`of anV upper and lowerA sash provided with Ymy improved lock. 1 i
Figure 2,- a. perspective view of the lock in detail.
Figure d, a bottom view of the bolt-case.

Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in'L all the gures.
My improvement'belong's to that class in which th e lock is appliedto the meeting-tailed" the sash for the The invention consists in a. bolt and catch of peculiar construction, and.soarranged as to be self-locking, and to engage, even if the. sash does not shut entirely down, and t hold the railsclosely together, to exclude wind and prevent rattling.. 5
It further consists in the method of securing the bottom plate to the bolt-case by eyelets or hollow r' whchattach in the ordinary screw-holes. A v l As represented in`thedrawingsA B are the'meeting-,railsoi an upperfa'nd lower sash. On the upper rai -is attached a catch, C, having vertical jaws o .r branches a a, separatedat such a distance apart as isnecessary to allow the bolt to pass through between. rI hesc branches' are provided with series of teeth or ratchets b I1,` whose rear sides areinclined inwrd and backward, as 'clearly indicated at e c, fig. 2.
,011" the top of the lower sash-rail is screwed afcnse, D, which contains the bolt E. Thisbolt is situated in a chamber, d, of the case, and is pressed forward by a coiled spring,f, which vencircles it. At its outer end it has a knob, g, by which itis operated, and at 4the inner end a head, 1 with` side flanges it', which are made wedging downward and outward, as clearly indicated in-iigs. 2 and 3.- I v 4 .The 4operation will bel readily understood.l When the rails meet, the wdging sides' of the head l1. strike I drenthe inclines c of the catch, and, the spring yielding, -allowsthe head to engage with the tccth, so as to .""W' Vproduce :i perfect lock, when the parts cannot be separated without pressing'in on the bolt. i Y I secure several yery in iportant advantages by this arrangement.V I
First, the device is self-locking, which is n 'ot the case with ordinary locksapplied to the meeting-rails.`-
Second, the series of teeth 6.b, onc aboveanother,'insnres the locking ofthe device, even if the lower sash does not shut quite down. 'Itis frequently the case thatsnow and ice collect on `the` sill underfthe sash. Inr such case' anordinary lock or bolt, attached to thev meeting'rail will .notconnech My device also allows the 'lock to enga-ge if Vthe sash do notstand quite square; Third, this lock, bythe action of the spring, draws the two rails together, and eifectually cxcludeswind and prevents rattlin,a Y I employ a plate, G, fitting in to thc bottoni of the bolt-case, resting on the rail, in ordc'r to prevent wear of' the wood by the bolt, and to holdthe latter firmly in placel `To secure this plate to the case, VI simply employ L eyelets or hollow rivets c 7c, which are bedded the ordinary screw-holes l l, througliwhich Vpass the screws that attach the case to the wood. This is avery simple and 'effective method of. connection, and avoids the .rnakingbf additional holes in the plate and the use ot`-rivets or extra screws.
" What Iclalm .as my invention, anddesireto secure by Il'etters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the bolt E, provided with the wedge-head andthe catch C, provided with teeth, or a series offteeth, b, operating in the manner-and-for the purpose substantially as herein set forth. 2. Securing the pleite G to the case D, by eyelets or hollow rive-ts attachinr,v in the ordinary screw-holes -l as herein set forth. i i In witnesswhereo I have hereunto signed my namein 'the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
