Be it known that` I, O. S. GARRETSON, of Buiiaiohn the county of Erie, andfStute of .New York, have linventada certain new and useful Improvement in Sash-Locks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a` full and exact, description thereof, reference being had 'to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specication.'V i' s Figure 1 is a. vertical cross-section of' themeetingrails`of anV upper and lowerA sash provided with Ymy improved lock. 1 i

It further consists in the method of securing the bottom plate to the bolt-case by eyelets or hollow r' whchattach in the ordinary screw-holes. Thisbolt is situated in a chamber, d, of the case, and is pressed forward by a coiled spring,f, which vencircles it. First, the device is self-locking, which is n 'ot the case with ordinary locksapplied to the meeting-rails.`-

'Itis frequently the case thatsnow and ice collect on `the` sill underfthe sash. Inr such case' anordinary lock or bolt, attached to thev meeting'rail will .notconnech My device also allows the 'lock to enga-ge if Vthe sash do notstand quite square; Third, this lock, bythe action of the spring, draws the two rails together, and eifectually cxcludeswind and prevents rattlin,a Y I employ a plate, G, fitting in to thc bottoni of the bolt-case, resting on the rail, in ordc'r to prevent wear of' the wood by the bolt, and to holdthe latter firmly in placel `To secure this plate to the case, VI simply employ L eyelets or hollow rivets c 7c, which are bedded the ordinary screw-holes l l, througliwhich Vpass the screws that attach the case to the wood. This is avery simple and 'effective method of. connection, and avoids the .rnakingbf additional holes in the plate and the use ot`-rivets or extra screws.

The combination of the bolt E, provided with the wedge-head andthe catch C, provided with teeth, or a series offteeth, b, operating in the manner-and-for the purpose substantially as herein set forth. 2.
