Description

UNTTED sTnTEs PATENT oEEioE.
ALBERT POTTS, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
MODE OF ATTACHING METALLIC LETTER-BOXES TO LAMP-POSTS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 19,578, dated March 9, 1858.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, ALBERT Po'rTs, of the city of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Combination of Letter-Box and Lamp-Post for Municipalities ;y and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure l represents the ordinary cast iron lamp post A, with the metallic letter box B, placed thereon. In the usual form of these cast iron lamp posts, the upper part as from B to C is made tapering, and the upper.
ornament D is removable at pleasure, thus affording an easy method of attaching the letter box in a perfectly secure manner to said posts. The letter box may be made as shown in Figs. 2 or 4, having perforations, as shown at E and F, corresponding to the tapering shaft of the post. The ornamental head D being removed these boxes are then slid to their proper position on said post as shown in Fig. 1 by passing said shaft through the perforations in the boxes as above mentioned. Figs. 3 and 5 are sectional drawings of the shaft of the lamp post, and
the letter boxes when placed thereon in their proper position.
The obj ect of this improvement is to afford greater facilities to the inhabitants of large cities for the depositing of letters, and to enable the carriers to collect, or the citizens to deposit therein, at any period of time. These letter boxes should be made with lids covering the drop hole so as to exclude the weather, and withy a small door secured by lock, for the purpose of removing the contents thereof. rIhey may also be provided with sight holes, so as to enable the carriers to discover instantly whether any mailable matt-er was contained therein.
What I claim as my invention and desire* to secure by Letters Patent, is-
y The combination of letter boxes and lamp posts, by making the letter boxes (metallic) 'with a perforation, or socket, through the center or side thereof, as shown at E and F, so as to slide over and embrace the shaft of the ordinary cast iron lamp post, vas above described and for the purposes mentioned. ALBERT FOTTS. Witnesses:
CHARLES Po'r'rs, JACOB B. CoATs.
