Description
May 1, 1934. P. J. BENBOUGH COMBINATION CASKET AND RECEIVER THEREFOR 2 Sheets-Sheet l Filed June 29, 1932 Snoentor (Ittorneg May 1, 1934 P. J. BENBOUGH COMBINATION CASKET AND RECEIVER THEREFOR Filed June 29, 1952' 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 (Ittorneg Patented May 1, 1934 ET ST ATES PATENT @FFECE COMBINATION CASKET AND RECEIVER THEREFOR 6 Claims.
My invention relates to. combination caskets and receivers therefor, and the. objects of my invention are:
First, to provide a combination casket and recei er therefor in which the receiver not only forms the support for the casket but also forms the cover or lid therefor, thus simplifying the construction of the casket;
Second, to provide a combination casket and receiver therefor in which the casket may be very plain economical of construction, yet when incorporated with the casket receiver, has all the appearance. of a more expensive casket;
Third, to provide a combinationcasket and receiver therefor in which the casket includes a novelly arranged inner lid or cover adapted to fit within the cover portion of the casket receiver so that the casket may be closed when transported separately from the receiver;
Fourth, to provide a combination casket and receiver therefor in which the inner lid of the casket includes a sliding panel which registers with a door provided in the outer cover or lid forming a part of the casket receiver, whereby the outer cover of the casket receiver appears to be the only cover of the casket when the door and panel are open;
Fifth, to provide a casket receiver which is particularly useful in connection with caskets having removable handles; and
Sixt to provide on the whole a novelly constructed receiver for caskets which may be used repeatedly and which will not readily deteriorate or get out of order.
With these and other objects in view as will appear hereinafter, my invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the characters of reference thereon which form a part of this application, in which:
Figure 1 is perspective view of my novel casket receiver with the casket removed, the outer cover in the position assumed when closed and the door therein in its open position; Fig. 2 is a similar perspective view with the casket shown in position and the outer cover opened; Fig. 3 is an end elevational view of the casket receiver with the casket removed with parts and portions broken away and in section to facilitate the illustration; Fig. 4 is a fragmentary elevational view of the casket receiving tray showing one of the collapsible rods for supporting the outer cover when the casket is removed; Fig. 5 is a fragmentary, sectional, view thereof through 5-5,of Fig. 4;.Fig. 6 is a fragmentary plan View of the casket withthe upholstering omitted, and Fig. '7 is a'fragmentary sectional view thereof through 7,-7 of Fig. 6.
Similar characters of reference refer tosimilar parts and portions throughout the several views of the drawings.
. A low, relatively long, narrow pedestal 1 is provided which may be mounted upon suitablecasters 2. The pedestal 1 supports a casket receiving tray 3. The tray 3 is provided with upwardly extending walls 3a which snugly receive a casket l. The sides of the casket 4 are plain and straight, particularly their lower portions which fit within the walls 8a. The outer sides of said walls 3a are carved or otherwise ornamented so as to form ostensibly a part of the casket l, as shown best in Fig. 2.
The rear wall of the tray 3 is provided intermediate its ends with a pair of upwardly extending posts 5. Hinged to the upper extremities of the posts 5 is an outer cover 6 of sufficient size to completely cover the casket 4. The axis of rotation of the cover is disposed so that when the outer cover 6 is in its horizontal position, it lies flat upon the casket and apparently forms the real cover therefor. This efiect is enhanced by upholstering the outer cover and providing the required ornamentation.
In order that the casket may be positioned with its handles, designated 4a, intact, the forward sides of the posts 5 are provided with channels 5a which allow sufficient vertical movement to permit the casket to be lifted out of the tray 3.
The outer cover 6 is provided with a door 7 hinged inwardly from and along the back marin thereof and extending about half the length of the casket. Thus, while the outer cover is in position over the casket, the door 7 may be opened, as shown in Fig. 1.
In order to hold the outer cover 6 in its horizontal position when the casket 4 is removed, there is provided a pair of collapsible rods 8. These members are pivotally supported at the corners of the tray 3 at the side thereof opposite from the posts 5 and are adapted to lie in channels or grooves 3b provided in the floor of the tray so as to clear the casket.
The casket 4 is provided with an inner cover 9 which is relatively plain and which conforms approximately to the inner side of the outer cover 6. The inner cover includes a molding 9a which extends around the margins of the casket 4. Approximately one-half of the casket is covered with a fixed panel portion 9b connected with the molding 9a, the remaining half forms an opening along opposite sides of which are guides or channels 9d. A sliding panel 10 fits in the guides 90, and is adapted to slide under the fixed panel portion 91).
When the casket is in place and the outer cover is positioned thereover, the tray and outer cover appear to be parts of the casket itself. When the door 7 and the panel 10 are opened, the inner cover is still inconspicuous.
Though I have shown and described a particular construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions, I do not wish to be limited to this particular construction, combination and arrangement, but desire to include in the scope of my invention the construction, combination and arrangement substantially as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a casket receiver, a tray arranged to receive a casket, frame members extending upwardly from a margin of said tray clear of said casket, and a casket cover hinged to the upper portions of said frame members and arranged to extend over and cover said casket, said tray and cover ostensibly forming integral parts of said casket.
2. In a casket receiver, a tray arranged to receive a, casket, frame members extending upwardly from a margin of said tray clear of said casket, a casket cover hinged to the upper portions of said frame members and arranged to extend over and cover said casket, said tray and cover ostensibly forming integral parts of said casket, and a door in said casket cover for exposing a portion of said casket.
3. In a combination casket and receiver therefor wherein there is a casket, the combination with said casket of a casket receiving structure including a base portion, frame members and a casket cover hinged thereto.
4. In a, combination casket and receiver therefor wherein there is a casket, the combination with said casket of a casket receiving structure including a base portion, frame members, a casket cover hinged thereto, and a door in said casket cover at one end thereof only.
5. In a combination casket and receiver therefor wherein there is a casket, the combination with said casket of a pedestal, a tray mounted on said pedestal and including an upturned marginal rim adapted to receive said casket.
6. In a combination casket and receiver therefor wherein there is a casket, the combination with said casket of a pedestal, a tray mounted thereon and including an upturned marginal rim adapted to receive the lower edge of said casket, frame members extending upwardly from
