Description

M. WEISS March 27, 1934.
BUCKLE- Filed Nov. 3, 1935 INVENTOR Mae/5 VVE/5S BY g 7/ ef fe ORNE Patented Mar. 27, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT oFFIcE BUCKLE Morris Weiss, Far Rockaway,
Die & Button Mould Co., Inc., New
Liberty N. Y., assignor to 1 claim.
This invention relates to improvements in buckles such as employed on wearing apparel and has particular reference to the cross bar construction therefor.
It has been heretofore known to make buckles of two metallic plate members each of which is provided with a channelled cross bar, and to interengage said plate members so that the cross bar of one plate is nested within that of the other in order to reinforce the structure against strains to which it is subjected when in use.
An object of the present invention is to provide an improved buckle of practical construction in which the cost of production as compared with known structures, is materially lessened by the elimination of the cross bar of one of the two plate members of the buckle, and the cross bar of the other member stifened against strains by the attachment thereto of a separate reinforcing element.
Another object is to provide a buckle of simple construction wherein the cross bar thereof is made to at least partially embrace a reinforcing rod that is co-extensive therewith so as to hold said rod in rigid position to thereby strengthen the cross bar.
The above and other objects will appear more clearly from the following detailed description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing which illustrates a preferred embodiment of the inventive idea.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a buckle constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a rear elevation thereof.
Figure 3 is a plan view of the inner side of the front plate member forming a part of the buckle.
Figure 4 is a similar view of the rear plate member.
Figure 5 is a section on the line 5 5 of Figure 1, and Y Figure 6 is a section on the line 6-6 of Figure 1.
In the preferred form of the invention illustrated herein, the buckle is shown as comprising the cooperating front and rear plates 7 and 8, respectively, both of which are stamped from any suitable sheet metal. The plates are shown as rectangular in formation, but it will of course be understood that they may be made to assume any desired configuration,
The front plate 7 is provided around its entire outer edge with a lateral flange 9 and centrally thereof there is formed an opening 10 which also has its periphery provided with a flange 11 similar to the flange 9. The opening 10 is divided medially of two of its opposed edges by a cross bar 12 of channelled formation so as to include two side walls or flanges 13 which add rigidity* .60 to the structure. Due to the strains to which the cross bar is subjected when in use it is desirable to additionally reinforce the cross bar. In accordance with the present invention, this is accomplished by the use of a reinforcing wire/ rod 14 which is introduced into the channel of the cross bar 12 and securely held therein by bending the side walls 13 of said bar inwardly toward each other and into contact with the rod 14 so that the bar will effect a three-point-O contact therewith as shown in Figure 5. The rod 14 is of a length to be co-extensive with the cross bar and its ends project slightly beyond the ends of said bar into overlapping relation to adjacent portions of the plate '7 so as to addi- 175 tionally reinforce the junction point between said ends of the bar and the edges of the opening 10 where the fiange 11 is cut away to accommodate said projecting ends of the rod. At an intermediate point of the bar 12 the width of' 80 the same may be reduced by crimping the material as indicated at 15 so as to form a bearing for the customary pivoted tongue 16 of the buckle.
The rear plate 8 of the buckle body is of the2l85 same configuration as the plate 7 but slightly smaller in size, and is provided around its marginal edge with a flange 17 which is adapted to fit within the flange 9 of the plate 7 when the two plates are assembled. The plate 8 is alsd90 provided with a central opening 18 slightly larger than the opening 10 and bordered by the ange 19 designed to receive within its connes the flange 11 of the plate 7, the flange 19 being provided with opposed notches 20 into which the '95 ends of the cross bar 12 are fitted.
It is desirable in buckles of this character to enhance the ornamental appearance thereof by providing the outer plate 7 with a covering of fabric 21. This covering is attached in its operative position and securely held therein when the two plates 7 and 8 are assembled. To this end the edges of the covering 21 are rst folded over the flanges 9 and 11 of the plate 7, as indicated at 22 in Figure 5, and the plate 8 is then 105 introduced into the plate 7 with the flanges 17 and 19 engaging the edge portions of the covering 21 and wedging the same between said flanges and the adjacent flanges 9 and 11 of the plate 7, thereby maintaining the covering 21 in a: 110
tion extending across the opening of only one of said plates, and a reinforcing rod rigidly held in the channel of said bar by contact with the Walls thereof and having its ends projecting beyond the ends of said bar into overlapping relation with adjacent portions of the plate carrying said bar.
