J. MALTBY STRAP BUCKLE Filed June 6 1922 Patented Apr. 3, 1923..
UNITED TES PATENT OFFICE.
JULIUS MALTBY, OF WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO WATERBURY BUCKLE (30., OF WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION.
STRAP BUCKLE.
Application filed June 6, 1922.
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULrUs MALTBY, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVaterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Strap Buckles; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this applica tion, and represent, in-
Fig. 1 a plan view of a four-way strapbuckle embodying my invention, portions of the strap being shown by broken lines.
' Fig. 2 an edge view thereof.
Fig. 3 a view thereof in central vertical section.
Fig. 4 a detached plan view of the pivotal extension of the buckle.
ig. 5 a detached plan view of the buckle proper.
My invention relates to an improvement in 25 strap-buckles of the type which are provided with an extension for the attachment and deflection-threading of the strap, the object being to provide a simple, durable and convenient buckle of the character described,
constructed with reference to conforming itself to the shape of the package to which it is applied.
.IVith these ends in view, my invention consists in a strap-buckle having certain details of construction as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
In carrying out my invention,.as shown in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive, I employ a combined strap-fastening and strap-deflecting extension having the form of a right angle triangle and comprising two equal sides 10 and 11 and a long side 12, which latter is its strap-deflecting side. The said extension is made, as shown, from a single piece of wire and pivotally secured by a sheet-metal sleeve 13. embracing its side 10, to the inner bar 14 of a sheet-metal buckle-frame also comprising a parallel outer or gripping bar 15 and two side bars 16, also parallel with each other. The said buckle-frame is also formed Serial No. 566,216.
with a bar 17 mounting the pivotal tongue 18 and a parallel bar 19 forming a stop-bar for the tongue, the said bars 17 and 19 merging at their ends into the side bars 16 and being arranged intermediate the bars 14 and 15. The outer edge of the tongue 18 is serrated at 20 for co-action, through the strap 21, with the inner edge of the gripping-bar 15 in gripping the said strap, one end of which ispermanently fastened by rivets 22 to the side 10 of the triangular pivotal extension, the long side 12 of which provides for deflecting the strap at a right angle to the longitudinal axis of the buckle-structure as a whole, as shown in Fig. 1.
By pivotally connecting the extension with the buckle-frame, the buckle, as a whole, is articulated so as to be self-conforming to the shape of the package or bundle to which the buckle and strap are applied.
If desired, the pivotal extension might have even other forms, the requirement being that the frame shall be provided with a pivotal extension adapted in form to serve for the attachment of one end of the strap and the threading through and deflection thereof.
In making my improved strap-buckle, wire or sheet-metal may be used, as found expedient. I do not, therefore, confine myself to using one or the other.
I claim:
In a strap buckle, the combination'with a rectangular buckle-frame, of strap-gripping means mounted thereupon, a triangular, strap-fastening and strap-deflecting exten sion, and means made independent of the said buckle-frame and extension for flexibly connecting the same, the said means embrac ing the inner bar of the frame and one of the short sides of the extension.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JULIUS MALTBY.
