Description

J. 1=.MALLETTE& :L WALMSLEY. BARREL-COVERS.
No. 195,143. Patented Sept.11,1877.
UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN BARREL-COVERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 195,143, dated September 11, 1877; application filed February 15, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, J AMES PAscHALL MAL- LETTE and JAMES WALMsLEY, both of the city of Chicago, county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented an Improvement in Barrel-Covers; and We do hereby declare that the following` is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of this specication.
The barrelcover is made of wood, in two parts, A and B, connected by two small hinges and a strip of stout canvas, rubber, or cloth, the canvas, rubber, or cloth not only holding together the two parts, but protecting the crack caused by raising the half-lid A. The cover is readily attached to any size barrel by means of the lever C, with teeth, and thetwo clamps D. The lever, with teeth C, being placed on the under side of the cover, is pressed against the inner side of the barrelrim in the chines, which is resisted by the two clamps D placed upon the outer rim of the cover and pressed against the upper outside rim of the barrel.
The lever with teeth C is to be made of iron, and to be iive inches in length and threequarters of an inch at small and two inches at large end in width.
The clamps D are to be made of iron, and three-quarters of an inch in length and onequarter of an inch in width.
This cover can be used as a protection to all barrels.
By the use of canvas, cloth, or rubber, with hinges on the inside and between the two parts of the cover, the opening or slit caused by the raising the half-lid A is smaller, and thoroughly protected from dirt sliding th rough the opening and into the barrel.
The lever with teeth C, being on the under side of the barrel-cover, is thoroughly protected, and not liable to be broken bv coming in contact with other barrels or objects.
We are aware of the patent granted to Whitmore and Butler, under date of October 24, 1876, in which the cover is secured to the barrel by means of a projecting lug and thumbscrew on the outside part of the barrel, which construction is objectionable, in that it is liable to be broken oil by other bodies coming in contact therewith; nor do we desire to claim such a construction.
What we claim as new and useful is- The combination of the sections A and B, hinged together, and having their lower surfaces covered with canvas or similar material, with the clamps D and pivoted segmental lever C, constructed to operate as shown and described, and for the purpose specified.
JAMES PASCHALL MALLETTE. JAMES WALMSLEY.
