Description

' Patented Sept. 11', 18 77...
ENTOR ATTORNEYS MUM UNITED EMERY W. FENTON, OF JAMESTOWN, N. Y., ASSIGNOR OF TWO-THIRDS HIS RIGHT TO SAMUEL SWEET AND AUGUSTUS KIBLING, OF SAME PLACE.
' IMPROVEMENT IN BUTTER-TUBS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 195, R13, dated September 11, 1877; application filed July 10, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMERY W. FENTON, of Jamestown, in the county of Chautauqua and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Butter- Tubs; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification. My invention relates to butter and lard pails; and it consists in the devices for fastening the cover to the same, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a plan View, and Fig. 2 a side elevation, of a butter-pail embodying my invention.
A represents the pail, and B the cover thereof. On top of the cover B are, as usual, two strips, 0 G, as shown; but these strips or cleats form no part of my invention.
D D represent two bails, made of wire, and attached to the top of the cover B. The ends of each bail D form eyes a a, which are spread apart, and fastened to the cover B with staples b b. The arms of the bail incline inward toward its center, and the center of the bail forms a loop, d, which is bent downward over the outer edge of the cover, and projects below the top edge of the pail A. This center of the loop is fastened to the pail by means of a hook, h, screwed into the side of the pail.
When the hook is turned downward the bail is held down and the cover held firmly on the pail; and when the cover is to be removed it is only necessary to turn the hook upward, when the bail can easily be released.
It will therefore, under no circumstances, be necessary to bend the bails after they are once fitted; but they may always remain of the same shape.
Instead of a hook, h, I may, in some cases, use a screw,
It will be seen that, by the construction of the wire bails D, I obtain with two fastenings, as it were, four lines of bearings, extending from four points on top of the cover, which points are about equidistant from each other and from the center of the cover, thereby making the cover retain its place without trouble.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with the pail A and cover B, the wire bails D D, constructed as described, having their ends spread apart, and fastened to the cover by staples b, and their centers forming loops d, and the hooks h, whereby four lines of hearing are obtained from four points on top of the cover, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 14th day of June, 1877.
EMERY W. FEN TON Witnesses FRANK GAL'I, SAMUEL SWEET.
