Description
e. w. LENGFIELD.
FOLDING WASH-BENCHES.
No. 194,829, Patented Sept. 4,1877.
UNITED STATES G. WILLIS LENGFIELD,
PATENT OFFICE.
OF OHAZY, QNEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN FOLDING WASH-BENCHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 194,829, dated September 4, 1877; application filed June 19, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, G. WILLIS LENGFIELD, of Ohazy, in the county of Clinton and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Folding Wash- Bench; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to furnish an improved folding wash-bench for laundry purposes, which shall be simple in its arrangement, convenient for use, and so constructed that it will fold together compactly, and occupy only the space required by the breadth of the side frames and the center frame or standard.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved folding wash-bench when extended for use. Fig. 2 is a vertical crosssection of the same when folded.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts.
The invention consists of a central upright frame, to each side of which, at asuitable height from the floor, upon which the lower end of the frame stands, corresponding frames are hinged, at the extremities of which legs are so pivoted that when these side frames are extended horizontally from the perpendicular frame or standard in the center they are supported in that position by these legs, which areswung down beneath them, thus forming a firm and substantial bench or platform on either side of the upright central frame or standard, upon which wash-tubs can be placed.
The top bar of the center frame or standard is intended to sustain the clothes-wringer, so that it can be conveniently used in connection with the wash-tubs on either side.
A is the central frame or standard, which is intended to stand upright upon the floor, and support the interior extremities of the side frames B and 0 when they are extended horizontally for use by means of the hinges a and nal slots 0 in its side bars, through which pass set-screws d d, which are connected with the interior frame, and are intended to control the sliding movement of the upper division, so that it can be securely attached to the lower division after it has been raised or lowered to any desired height.
To the inner side of the exterior extremities of the side frames B and O the legs 0, which are securely braced together, are so pivoted that they can be folded, when not in use, entirely between the sides of the two frames B and O, or, when required for support, they can be swung out as far as is allowed by the shoulders in the cross-bars ff, which connect the two sides of the frames B and 0.
When the wash-bench is extended for use, as shown in Fig. 1, the lower ends of the side frames B and O are raised until they are horizontal, or as far as the hinges a will permit. The legs 0 are then drawn down and outward until their pivoted ends are tightly braced against the shoulders in the cross-bars f f of the frames B and G. The upper division of the central frame or standard A, to the crossbar 9 of which the clothes-wringer has been attached, is then raised until its height is adapted to that of the wash-tubs, which are placed on the horizontal frames B and O on either side, when it is firmly secured to the lower division of the frame or standard A by the set-screws d d. All weight or pressure on the top of the bench, when thus extended, only serves to render it the more firm and substantial.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The frame or standard A, consisting of two divisions, one sliding over the other, and secured by set-screws d d, which work in longitudinal slots 0 in the side bars of the upper division, in combination with the side frames B and O, which are hinged to the standard, and supported horizontally by legs 6, pivoted to their outer extremities, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
G. WILLIS LENGFIELD. Witnesses:
WILBER LENGFIELD, H. E. BARNARD.
