Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY L. WHARTON, OF YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN BILLIARD-CHALK HOLDERS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. [94,75 ll dated August 28, 1877; application filled January 13,1877.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY L. WHAETON, of Youngstown, in the county of Mahoning Y and State of Ohio, have invented a new and AImproved Billiard-Chalk Holder, of which A the following is a specification the door.
The invention consists of a chalk-holding casing, with detachable lid and sliding chalk, placed on a spring-acted base-plate or follower, having projecting teats or roughened surface.
In the drawing, A represents the casing of my improved chalk-holder, which may be made of wood, ivory, rubber, papier mache or any other suitable material, and of square, round, or other shape.
A piece of chalk, B, of corresponding size and shape, is placed into the casing on a spring-acted plate or follower',O, which presses the chalk forward against the centrally-perforated lid D.
The plate O has a rougheued surface or projecting teats, a, for the purpose of preventing the turning of the chalk with the billiard-cue when the holder is made of round shape.
rI he lid D is placed on 'the casing or box by vmeans of slots, b, locking over the heads of retaining-studs d, so that the lid may he readi ily taken oi for replacing the chalk. The lid may, however, be attached in any other suitable manner, provided that it may be conveniently removed for putting ina new piece of chalk Whe'iwtli old one is Worn out.
The chalk-holder supplies chalk to the tip merely, and not to the cue, preventing thereby the marking of the billiardtable by the cue. It may be attached to the table by a small chain or cord applied to the holder, so that the player cannot inadvertently put it in his pocket and carry it off, which is frequently of great annoyance to proprietors of billiardtables.
The chalk is inserted by pressing down on the same with the finger passed through the hole of the lid until the lid is in position. When the lid is to be detached the chalk is retained in similar manner until it is taken Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pat ent- 1. The box A, having fixed screw-heads and detachable recessed lid D, the bottom plate or follower U, and its spring, all combined and arranged to operate substantially as described.
2.l The combination of box or casing A, having xed screw-heads, with a detachable lid having corresponding recesses to be locked to the box, substantiallyas set forth.
. HENRY L. WHARTON.
