COMBINATION ASH TRAY PAPER MATCH PACKAGE HOLDER Filed Dec. 29, 1952 Patented Feb. 13, 1934 COMBINATION ASH TRAY AND PAPER MATCH PACKAGE HOLDER Andr do Marcillac, New Orleans, La.
Application December 29, 1932 Serial No. 649,433
2 Claims. (Cl. 131-51) This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in a combination ash tray and paper match package holder.
The primary object of the invention is to provide an ash tray that maybe constructed of any suitable material of an argillaceous or metallic character such as glass, bakelite or any vitreous substance or pressed paper, and possessed of a pleasing finish in any manner desired, decorated, polished or otherwise and having the usual central receptacle portion with a marginal flange radially grooved at intervals for the support of cigars or cigarettes with depressed portions in the marginal flange struck therefrom, each comprising a bar or strip for the interlocking reception of a paper match package with the flange of the ash tray constituting a holder for a paper match package.
With the above and other objects in view that will become apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a top plan view or" the combination ash tray and paper match packageholder constructed in accordance with the present invention, showing the central receptacle, the radially grooved marginal flange and the paper match package holders carried by the flange;
Figure 2 is a side edge elevational view of the device; and
Figure 3 is a vertical cross-sectional view taken on line 3--3 of Figure 2, showing a paper match package interlockingly supported on a part of the flange of the ash tray.
The ash tray is generally designated by the reference character 5 and maybe formed of any material desired and includes a central bottom wall 6 that may be of any configuration in plan desired, a side wall '7 flaring upwardly from the bottom wall 6 defining a central ash receptacle and carrying at its upper edge an outwardly directed and upwardly inclined marginal flange ,8. Spaced radial depressions 9 are provided in the marginal flange 8 to provide supports for cigars or cigarettes.
The ash tray as shown in plan in Figure 1 is of substantially rectangular formation, but as stated, may assume any configuration desired, the rectangular formation providing ends 10 and sides 11. The paper match package holder is associated with the flange 8 of the sides 11 and includes a portion at each side 11 partially struck out from the flange in a depressed manner defining a strip or bar 12 located in a plane below the flange 8 and connected at its ends to said flange by end walls 13, the partially struck out bar 12 having the inner side edge 14 thereof spaced from the flange 8 and forming a slotted opening 15 between the inner side edge of the bar 12 and upwardly disposed adjacent edge of the flange 8 as clearly shown in Figure 3.
The paper match package is of the ordinary fold-over or envelope type having a back wall 16 with the ,unheaded ends of the paper matches 1'7 secured to one end of the back 16 as at 18 while the opposite side of the match package carries the abrasive strip 19 that forms the retainer for the free edge of the package cover 20 carried by the back 16. To attach the match package to the ash tray, the cover 20 of the package is moved to a fully opened position and is passed through the slotted opening 15 at the upper side of the bar 12, being moved therethrough until the abrasive surface 19 of the match package is located at the inner edge of the bar 12 with the matches '17 resting upon the bar as shown in Figure 3. The back 16 and cover 20 of the package is then folded about the matches 17 to position the free edge of the cover 20 beneath the abrasive retainer edge 19 therefor. The match package is securely retained in position upon the ash tray and matches are always readily accessible with the striking surface 19 exposed at all times.
From the above detailed description of the invention, it is believed that the construction and operation thereof will at once be apparent, and while there is herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the inventiones claimed.
I claim:---
1. In a one piece portable combination ash tray and paper match package holder, an ash tray including a continuous flaring marginal flange having depressions for the reception of cigars, and bars partially struck out from the flange for the interlocking support of a paper match package.
and paper match package holder, an ash tray including a continuous flaring marginal flange having depressed portions for the reception of cigars and the like, and bars partially struck out from the flange providing an elongated slot separating the inner edge of the bar from the flange for the support of a paper match package having the package cover interlockingly inclosing the bar, the bars being depressed and occupying a plane below the plane of the flange.
