WISCONSIN.
ASH RECEIVER AND MATCH-BOX HOLDER.
Application filed December'zfi, 1923. Serial No. 682,665.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR MILES, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Racine, in the county of Racine and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ash Receivers and lVlatch-Box Holders; and I do hereby declare that. the following a. full, clear, and exact description thereof.
This invention relates to ash receivers and match box holders. and is-particularly directed to a device of this type'adapted for use in automobiles.
Objects of this invention are to provide a combined match box holder and ash receiver which may be removably positioned within an automobile, which. is easily manipulated, in which means are provided for holding a box Oli"1ll2LhCllQS adiacent the upper end of the device and providingfor the reception of the burnt matches or ashes while the box is in position, and in which the box itself forms a cover for the ash receiving portion of the device.
Further objects are, to provide a combined match box holder and ash receiver which may be cheaply manufactured from sheet material by simple stamping or drawing processes, which is of attractive and simple design, and which may be cheaply produced.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the apparatus.
Figure 2 is a view of the blank from which the device is formed, such view beingon a reduced scale.
Figure 3 is a transverse vertical section through the device.
The apparatus is preferably formed from sheet metal and comprises a verticalback portion 1 which, in the finished article, terminates in an upwardl projecting tongue 2 provided with a key hole slot 3 so that the device may be hung from a suitable projection within an automobile. The back 1 carries a bottom 4, sides 5 and a front 6. The front is provided with a flared funnel like member 7 which is open at its upper end and which communicates with the interior of the box. The top of the box is provided with a series of inturned flanges 8 which define a relatively large opening 9 across the top. A. spring retaining plate rtongue 10 projects forwardly from the back and is spaced from the top of the box, as is shown in Figure 3.
In using the device the match box 11 is slipped between the tongue 10 and the top of the box and closes the opening 9. The sliding portion 12 of the'box may easily be projected sidewise so that the matches may be readily extracted it being noted that the striking; face of the box is exposed. After the match has been used, it is dropped into the funnel like portion 7 and slides down into the box. Also ashes may be deposited into this funnel like porvides tor the ready discharge of the accumulated material through the enlarged open ing 9 as well as through the funnel 7. The large opening); 9 permits the tree discharge of even relatively large portions of accumullated matter with the greatest case It is to be understood that the relative proportioning of the parts may be varied. For instance the tunnel shaped portion 7 may be made relatively small as compared with the opening 9, as this portion 7 need not be very large for the reason thatit is not called upon to discharge the accumulated material, as such discharge may conveniently take place through the opening 9.
It is further to be understood that any degree of tension may be imparted to the boxby suitably bending the spring tongue 10. This tongue may be provided, as stated, with a beaded edge for further aiding in the retaining of the box or, if desired, such portion 10 may be ribbed or otherwise formed.
This construction lends itself readily to an extremely simple method of making the box. For example, as shown in Figure 2, the entire apparatus may be made from a single sheet of material by forming the blank as outlined in such figure. It will be noted from such figure that the spring top flap 10 and the back 1 are formed in one vertical panel with the portion 2 upstruck from such panel. Laterally from this panel and integrally joined to the back, one of the sides 5 may extend. Thereafter, the device may be considered, as formed of panels such as the front portion 6 with the downwardly projecting bottom 4L and the other side portion 5. The flanges S are secured by extending the panels forming the sides and front upwardly a slight distance, as shown in Figure 2, and, if desired, notches 13 may be provided between successive panels to aid in the forming of the corner of the flanges. The portion 7 is readily formed by providing a slit 1% either entirely across the panel forming the front 6 or else part way across and by pressing such portion 7 outwardly therefrom. Thereafter the parts are suitably folded into the box shape and the edges seamed, soldered, brazed, or otherwise secured.
It will be seen that a combined 'matcli box holder and ash receiver has been provided, which is of such construction that it may be readily formed from a single piece of sheet material, which may be readily manufactured at small cost, and which is effective in operation.
Although the invention has been de scribed in considerable detail, it is to be understood that the invention may be variously embodied and is, therefore, to be limited only as claimed.
1 claim:
A combined match box holder and ash receiver formed of a single piece of sheet material and comprising a. lower box like member adapted to receive ashes, and having an outwardly projecting flaring portion communi "ating therewith, said box like member having an open upper end, a resilient tongue spaced above said open upper end and adapted to clamp a box of matches over said open upper end, and a tongue projecting upwardly from said device and provided with an aperture adapted to engage a suitable support, said ash receiver being adapted for discharge through the upper open end when the box of matches is removed.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing l have hereunto set my hand at'Racine, in the county of Racine and State of Viseonsin.
ARTHUR MILES.
