f UNITED ,STATES PATENT OFFICE y rocKE'r AND PURSE ASH RECEPTACLE LucylM. Potter, ASan Mateo, Calif. e. `Apensaran July 29,1946, sena1N0.6s6,840 e l f `1 This invention relates to an improved ash receptacle and particularly relates to an especially constructed `neat and compact device, which can readily be `carried in the pocket or purse of an individual andv which device when in open position willi support a burning cigarette or the like in a convenient position for the user and will serve as an individual ash tray for receiving ashes, cigarette and match butts and the like and when closed willwretain the said elements therein and be doubly sealed and doubly locked, positively iireproof and perfectly safe to be carried.
The primary `object of the present invention is to provide a neat compact container having a top hinged cover and an `intermediate sliding cover to lock the said hinged cover to the wall of thecontainer and to further provide asecond locking means which will be automatically controlled by the opening and` closing of the said sliding cover, whereby the hingedcover is locked by the sliding cover. I l I Another object of the present invention is to provide means on the inner face of the top hinged cover for supporting a plurality of burning cigarettes when the said cover is in its open position.
A further object of the present invention is to provide means on the said hinged cover for removably retaining a conventional book of matches.
A still further object of the present invention is the provision within the container of a plurality of specially shaped cups for extinguishing burning cigarettes and the like.
A still further object of the present invention is the provision of means for preventing accidental tilting of the container when the covers are in their open positions.
A still further object of the present invention is to provide a pocket ash receptacle of the character described that is durable, economical to manufacture, simple in construction, positively reproof and highly serviceable in use.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of the description and wherein for the purpose of illustration like numerals designate like parts throughout the same,
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of the improved device shown in its open position,
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken through line 2-2 of Fig. 1, looking in direction of the arrows,
, 2 Claims.` (Cl. 131-235) i f i I I 2 Fig. 3 is a rear elevational View of the `device when in its open position asillustrated in Fig. 2, Fig. 4 isa front elevationalview of the device inits cloesd position, K Fig. 5 is a transverse vertical sectional View taken through line 5-5 of Fig. 4, showing the device in its closed position.4
Referring in detail tothe drawing and the numerals thereof the numeral 1 designates as a Awhole a suitable containermade of sheet metal or any suitable fireproof material and the numeral 8 a top cover that is hinged thereto as at 9. The said containeris preferably rectangular in shape having front and rear sides IU and I I respectively, two opposite ends I2 and I3` and a flat bottom portion I4.
A suitable clip'li is preferably xed to the inner face lor" the hinged cover 8 for removably retaining a conventional match book I6. The inner portion "of, the said cover is also provided with a pluralityof cigarette supporting members O1" ,holders H, which holders are preferably U- shaped and taper downwardly toward the inside of the container and are soldered or otherwise fixed to the innersurface of the cover in any suitable manner. It will be obvious that a cigarette I8, shown in dot and dash lines, can be placed in oneof the said holders I'l in the usual manner, whereby the device will serve as a convenient individual ash tray. The inside of the container I preferably has a plurality of cupshaped members I9 which provide a suitable medium for extinguishing burning cigarettes in the usual manner. The present illustration shows two cup shaped members I 9 formed from a single strip of material 20 and positioned in oppositely opposed corners as shown in Fig. 1.
The numeral 2| designates an intermediate sliding cover supported in the slot 22 provided in the rear wall II of the container and in suit-- able grooves 23 and 24 formed in the end walls I2 and I3 respectively. When in closed position the said cover 2I fits over the cups I9 and over the top edge of the strip 20 forming a lower sealed ash chamber 25 as shown in Fig. 5. When the hinged cover 8 is in its closed position the match book I6 and cigarette holders I 'I positioned on the inner face thereof t into the upper chamber 26 and above the sliding cover 2|.
As hereinbefore stated one of the principal objects of the present invention is to provide the container with a top hinged cover and an intermediate sliding cover and to provide a double locking means for locking the hinged cover to the container whereby the accidental opening of as .indicated t the same and the fire hazard caused thereby Wiil be positively prevented. Accordingly, a resilient lip 21 having a projection 28 is provided on the iront nol portion of the cover 8, which projecn tion is capableiof tting into an indentation 2! provided in the front wall l of the 'container thus providingAY a snap fastener for locking the said cover 8. The intermediate sliding cover 2l is formed@ the. iront .end Dertien thereof with an upwardertensionS-. 'and ahQrizQntaLpmieG-i tion 3 I, which projection is capable l'of tting into the apertures 32 and 33 provided respectively into the said lip 21 and front wall l0 of the container when the intermediateliding lis* closed; y position as shown in Eig. 5, thus double-locking the hinged cover to the container.
