Description
Patented Feb. 6, 1934 UNITED STATES DEVICE FOR LIMITING OPENING MOVE- MENT OF WINDOW SASHES Clemence F. England, Minneapolis, Minn.
Application July 30, 1932. Serial No. 626,690
2 Claims.
This invention relates to a device for preventing unauthorized entry of parties through a window frame into a house while at the same time permitting window sashes mounted in the frame to be raised to provide ventilation.
It is the general object of the present invention to provide a novel and improved sash movement limiting device of cheap and simple construction, which can be easily applied for efficient use.
To this end, generally stated, the invention consists in the novel parts and novel combinations of parts hereinafter defined in the claims and described in the following specification, made in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein like reference characters refer to the same or similar parts throughout the various views, and, in which,
Fig. 1 is a view in inner side elevation showing portions of a window frame, upper and lower sashes mounted therein and an embodiment of the present invention applied to the sashes;
Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, as indicated by the arrows; and
Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the device of the invention on an enlarged scale.
Referring to the drawing, there are illustrated portions of a window frame 4 within which a glass equipped lower sash 5 is mounted for sliding movement and also within which a glass equipped upper sash 6 is mounted for sliding movement. The sashes 5 and 6 may be of standard construction and in accordance with the usual practice the lower rail of the upper sash projects inwardly somewhat beyond the side rails of the upper sash.
In accordance with the invention, there is provided a bar '7 having a screw receiving countersunk aperture 8 at one end and an arcuate portion 9 at its other end. The ends of this arcuate portion 9 project well above the upper surface of the remainder of the bar 7 and also laterally thereof. This bar '7 is secured by a screw 10 running through the opening 8 to the upper rail of the lower sash 5 adjacent one jamb of the window frame 4. The bar will, of course, be pivotally mounted on the screw '7 and the bar is of such length that when swung to the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the arcuate portion 9 will project over the bottom rail of the upper sash 6. A cylindrical member 11 having a countersunk screw receiving opening 12 therein is secured by means of a screw 13 to one side rail of the upper sash 6 in spaced relation above the position of the bar 7 when the two sashes are in closed position. The curvature of the arcuate portion 9 is less marked than the curvature of the cylindrical member 11.
When it is desired to position the limiting device so as to permit opening movement of one or both sashes 5 and 6 and at the same time limit possible opening movement of either or both sashes to such an extent as to prevent unauthorized entry of a person through the window, the bar '7 will be swung on its pivot screw 10 to the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 with the arcuate portion 9 overlying the lower rail of the upper sash 6. In this position, as either the lower sash 5 is raised or the upper sash 6 is lowered, the cylindrical member 11 will strike the arcuate portion 9 of the bar 7 to prevent anopening of larger than a certain predetermined size being exposed through the window. If the center of the arcuate portion '7 does not happen to be in absolutely true alinement with the center of the cylindrical member 11, as either or both of the sashes are opened, engagement of the cylindrical member 11 with the arcuate portion 9 will serve to swing the bar 7 to such a position that the center of the arcuate portion 9 will be alined with the center of the cylindrical member 11. Of course, when it is desired to permit opening movement of either or both sashes to their fullest extent, the bar 7 will be swung on its pivot screw 10 to such a position that the arcuate portion 9 does not project over the lower rail of the upper sash whereupon bar '7 and member 13 will not interfere with sliding movement of the two sashes.
It will be understood that changes may be made in the form, details, arrangement and proportions of the various parts without departing from the scope of the present invention.
What is claimed is:
1. A device for limiting the opening movement of window sashes comprising a stop member and a cooperating bar member at least one of said members being adapted to be mounted on a sliding sash and the other of said members being adapted to be mounted in position to be struck by its cooperating member as the sliding sash is opened, means for pivotally mounting said bar member for swinging movement out of the path of said stop member, said bar member having a recessed surface normally opposing said stop member, said stop member being adapted to engage said recessed surface and cam said bar member to swing the same into aligned position with. respect to said stop member when said bar member is not exactly aligned with said stop member.
2. A device for limiting the opening movement of window sashes comprising a cylindrical stop member and a cooperating bar member at least one of said members being adapted to be mounted on a. sliding sash and the other of said members being adapted to be mounted in position to be struck by its cooperatingmember as the sliding sash is opened, means for pivotally mounting said bar member for swinging movement out of the its pal
