CIGAR, CIGARETTE, OR THE LIKE RECEPTACLE Filed Nov. 14, 1929 Patented Feb. 6, 1934 CIGAR,
CIGARETTE, on THE LIKE RECEPTACLE John W. Fitz Gerald, Milwaukee, Wis., assignor to Briggs & Stratton Corporation, Milwaukee, Wis., a corporation of Delaware Application November 14, 1929 This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in cigarettes, cigars, and like receptacles and has as an object the provision of means whereby opening of the receptacle cover or top elevates the receptacle contents top thereof to facilitate their removal.
Another object of this invention resides in the provision of an improved receptacle of acter described which is of extremely simple construction and lends itself to ornamental and attractive designs.
A more specific object of this invention resides in the provision of an improved receptacle of the character described having a movable bottom and means elevating the bottom and top in unison with the top as it is moved to open position, projecting the upper ends of the cigarettes and the like above the receptacle top to facilitate their removal.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description bodiment of my invention constructed to the best mode I have so far devised for the practical application of the principles thereof,
and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a receptacle embodying my invention parts thereof being broken away and in section to illustrate structural details, the cover being shown in open position;
Figure 2 is a view partly in transverse section and partly in elevation, taken through Figure 1 on the plane of the line 22; and
Figure 3 is a fragmentary perspective View of the means for movably mounting the bottom and cover member to effect the simultaneous eleva- 4 tion of the cover and the bottom, the parts being separated.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawing, in which like I designate like parts throughout the several views, 5 represents a receptacle of any desired shape and construction having a normally closed cover 6. The cover, in the present instance, is preferably pivotally connected with the receptacle to swing or pivot sidewise to and from open i position. Atube 7 extends from the cover adja- Serial No. 407,155
Claims. (Cl. 312-78) cent its marginal edge to pivotally receive a stud or post 8 extended upwardly from the fixed bottom 9 of the receptacle.
The depth of the receptacle, when used in connection with cigarettes, is preferably approximately that of the length of a cigarette so that cigarettes placed therein normally have their upper ends approximately flush with the receptacle top, their lower ends resting on a movable bottom 10 mounted in the receptacle, and of a shape and size to slidably fit therein. The movable bottom has a sleeve or bushing 11 secured in an aperture 12 near one edge and in which the tube '7 is guided, there being a flange or shoulder 13 on the extreme lower end of the tube on which the movable bottom rests to retain the cover and bottom as a unit.
The upper end of stud 8 is cut on the bias to form an incline or cam face 14 which cooperates with the similarly biased lower end 15 of a stud 16 secured at its upper end to the top 6. Stud 16 provides the means for securing tube 7 to the cover, its upper end being riveted to the cover, as at 1'7, the tube and stud being pinned or otherwise secured together, as at 18.
Rotation of the cover 6 from closed position rotates the pin 16 causing the two cam surfaces 14 and 15 to elevate the cover, in the manner illustrated in Figure 1 and by dotted lines in Figure 2, the tube '7 raising with the cover so that the shoulder 13 consequently causes a similar elevation of the movable bottom 10, projecting the upper ends of the cigarettes 0 above the top of the receptacle facilitating their removal.
The cover and bottom being elevated in correspondence, the proper distance is maintained between them at all times and the cam faces 14 and 15 cooperate so that the normal weight of the bottom 10, cover 6, and the cigarettes C tend to rotate the cover to closed position, as will be readily apparent. The cover 6 is preferably provided with a knob or finger engaging member 19 near its edge diametrically opposite its pivot point for convenience in opening and closing.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. In a receptacle for cigars, cigarettes and the like having an open top, a cover for the receptacle, a substantially rigid vertical post member carried by the receptacle and mounting the cover for movement to and from closed position, a bottom vertically movable in the receptacle, means connecting the bottom with the cover, said means permitting movement of the cover about the post member, and means carried by the cover and cooperating with the post member for raising the cover and the bottom upon movement of above the the charproceeds,
according numerals the cover to open position, to project the upper ends of cigarettes or the like in the receptacle above the top thereof.
2. In a receptacle of the character described, having an open top, a movable bottom in the receptacle, a cover for the open top of the receptacle, telescoped means mounting the cover and the movable bottom, opening of the cover producing relative rotation between said telescoped mounting means, and means effective upon relative rotation of said telescoped means for elevating the cover and movable bottom in unison.
3. In a receptacle for cigarettes or the like having a closed bottom upon which the receptacle is adapted to rest and an open top, a false bottom within said receptacle, a tubular member rotatably connected to said false bottom, a cover for said receptacle fixedly connected to said tubular member and rotatable about the axis of said tubularmember, a fixed support for the cover and false bottom extending up into; the tubular member, and carried by said tubular member and said support means to move said cover and false bottom simultaneously along said axis upon rotation of said cover about said axis.
4. In a receptacle for cigarettes or the like, a bottom, a tubular member rotatably connected to said bottom, a cam member Within said tubular member and supported from said receptacle, a cover for said receptacle, a cam follower fixed on said cover and fixed within said tubular member whereby rotation of said cover causes movement of the cover and the bottom along the axis of rotation.
5. In a receptacle for cigarettes or the like including a closed bottom and an open top, a false bottom mounted within said receptacle, a tubular member forming an axis rotatably mounted in said false bottom and adapted to move said false bottom axially, a cam mounted in said bottom member and telescoping within said tubular member, a cover for said receptacle, a cam follower on said cover, said cam follower being fixed within said tubular member and contacting said cam whereby rotationalmovement of said cover about the tubular member asan axis causes simultaneous axial movement of said cover and said false bottom.
