The i resent invention relates to improvements 1n extingnishin devices, particularly adapted for vextingu'is ing cigarettes, cigars and the like.

A n importa-nt object ofthe invention is the provisionof a device adapted to be associated with an ash tray and arranged. for reciproeating movement to extinguish cigarettes and the like properly positioned on the tray.

A further object of the invention is the provision .of an -extinguishing device of the may also be rotated tinction to an out of the way position.

Referring to the preferred form ofthe invention, illustrated in lFigures 1 to d, inclu 3 sive, the numeral 10 generally indicates a. conventional form of ash tray commonly em- .i

The reciprocable stamping assembly is then rapidly rotated so as to'displace the cigarette from the central portion of the tray to the side margin for a repeated extinguishing operation.

In the modied construction shown in Figures 5 and 6, the guide post indicated at 22 is formed .to provided a tyvisted or threaded spiral engaging a screw 23 threaded transversely through the boss ofthe stampingY member 18 so that the .stampingV assembly will automatically rotate as it is pushed downwardly so that the cigarette displacing action is concurrent with the vertical extinguishing displacement so as to automatically discard the extinguished cigarette 4or cigar. This form of the invention is also shown ap-y ing movement on the post, and a cylinder at'- tached to the upper portion of the stamping plate slidable over the post for operative movement of the stamping plate.

A cigarette extinguishlng device comprising an upright guide post, ahorizontallyextendin stamping plate provided with a central t rough bore arranged for reciprocating and rotary movement on the post, a cylinder having its lower extremity attached. to the upper portion o f the stamping plate for vertically' and rotatably actuating the plate, and spring means mounted in the cylinder arranged to normally elevate the cylinder and stamping plate. In Figure 7 is illustrated a modified connection of the guide post, indicated at 26, with' a glass tray, indicated at 27.` In this construction, the lower end of 'the post is provided with an interiorly threaded bore having connection with a screw 28 fformed with an enlarged beveled head extending in a countersunk opening in the bottom of the tray. v

Thus, the present invention provides an extinguishin device of relatively simple construction an operation designed so that the cigarette or cigar to be extinguished may be placed in an extinguishing position and the reciprocating extinguishing member operatlvely actuatedby using only one hand, enabling use while the operator is engaged in playing other hand. v

A device ofthe character described comprising a tray, a guide post projecting up wardly from the bottom of the tray centrally thereof, a stamping'plate slidably associated with the guide post, means for adjusting the position of the stamping plate, and means resiliently supporting the said plate in an elevated position.
