This invention relates to containers useful for packing and displaying merchandise and the improved container made according to said invention is designed to meet practically all requirements for an efcient, economical and simple container for merchandise of various kinds.
The container comprises several parts and these parts may be employed wholly or in part to meet different requirements. The improved container is composed of an outer shell or body having a front wall, a back wall and side walls forming a tubular structure. An inner member provides a reenforcement or inner back wall for the outer body member.
In one embodiment of the invention, the inner member carries means for closing the bottom of the container, and in another embodiment of the invention, the shell or outer body member of the container carries the bottom closing means. In both instances the inner backing member carries a folding flap which is employed to cover the top of the box when the latter is in closed position, and when the box is open said ap is employed as a display card. The` flap is connected to the backing sheet of the inner member at a point which is defined by a creased line and the flap hinges about the creased line. When ythe inner member is properly located within the outer member the creased line will lie just below the top edge of the back wall of the outer member so that the flap, when raised, will be retained in a position substantially in alignment with the back wall of the container. The erect position of the aforesaid display card is maintained by the top edge of the back wall operating as a stop or abutment therefor.
In one form of the invention the inner member carries the means for closing the bottom of the container, in which case a closure flap eX- tending from the lower edge of the body member is provided. This flap is retained in place by a tuck-in fold provided thereon. In another form the bottom closure flaps. are provided directly on the body member. The container may be supplied to the customer in assembled condition, in which case the inner member is secured tothe body member by adhesive staples or the like at the box factory. Where the blanks are furnished separated from each other, a convenient uniting means is provided so that the said members may be united by hand operation by the user so as to eliminate the necessity of gluing or machine operation. ber, simple means are provided whereby the bottom may be partly pulled down so as to provide a base to support the container in an in-4 clined orbackwardly leaning position. y
The several embodiments of the present invention will be more fully described hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l is a perspective view showing the improved ycontainer' standing in ther open or display position;

Referring to both forms of the container shown herein, the selected blank A or B is folded to form a collapsible structure constituting the outer member or body of the container having a front wall l, a back wall 2, and side walls 3. The said blanks are creased as represented by broken lines u, and b to divide-the blanks into` sections forming said walls of the container. I n the firstA operation of manufacture, the blanks are folded so as to bring the gluing strip 4 over the opposite or freevedge of the blank where it is adhesively secured. .This operation of folding and gluing can be performed by any suitable machine of a standard type. The body so formed is collapsible and when set up is of a tubular form having an open top and bottom, means being provided to close the open bottom. l
To form the container shown in Figure 3, blank A is used. The means for closing the bottom comprises flaps 5 depending from the different sections in the blank and these flaps are adapted to be folded and glued by machine operation, if desired. Any other known and suitable form of bottom closure device may be employed if desired, particularly when the boX is to be assembled by hand operation without gluing.
In both embodiments of the invention, an additional blank A orB is employed and the selected blank is secured on the inside of the back wall of the container. In the embodiment of the invention shown in Figure 2, the blank A' is secured vtively little waste' of material.

The inner member is precisely located so that the crease line c lies just below the top edge d of the back Wall of the container. The nap 6 provides a cover for the open top of the container when it is in its closed position and when the container isv open, said flap 6 operates as a display card standing erect at the back of the container. It is desirable, in order to get the best eect, that the flap or show card 6 should stand in a position substantially in alignment with the back Wall of the container. To maintain the display device in aligned position, the crease line on which the nap 6 hinges is dropped below the top edge of the back Wall of the container, as stated, so that the portion of the top edge lying above the crease operates as a stop or abutment against Which the flap Will strike so as to prevent "it froml folding backwardly beyond the desired point.
Referring now particularlyV to the container shown in Figures 1 and 2, the inner or back wall reenforcing member B comprises a backing sheet, shown in Figure 8, which carries the folding display card or cover flap 6. Inner member B also carries means for closing the bottom of the container, comprising the flap 7 having the insert extension 8 which is arranged to be tucked into the container to retain the closing flap in place. Auxiliary means for closing the bottom comprises extensions 9 projecting from the side Walls 3 oi' the outer member. Extensions 9 are arranged to fold inwardly so as to assist in closing the bottom and to provide additional frictional means for engaging the tuck-in end 8 of the closure flap 7. The backing sheet is secured to the back Wall 2 of the container by suitable means. When the outer and inner members are joined together at the factory Where the boxes are made, they may be conveniently joined together by stapling or gluing. In such cases where the packer has to unite the two members together, convenient Ameans are provided for this purpose, which may comprise a circular hole 10 providedv in the inner member' B' which will register with tabs 11 cut out of the back Wall of the outer blank B. Io assemble, the tabs 11 are inserted into the hole 10 as shown in Figure 2. This connection securely fixes the members in a definite relation which is maintained When the box is in use.
In both examples shown the front Wall of the container has an opening cut therein through which the merchandise Within theV container may be viewed. Through this opening the securing connection lO-ll can also be conveniently manipulated.
It is often desirable to position a display container in an inclined position so as to get the best display eiect. The bottom closure iiap may be easily adjusted so as to operate as a base to support the container in an inclined position. The adjustment is effected by partially pulling out the tuck-in end 8 and then engaging the tab 12 out. therein With the bottom `edge of the front Wall. The container will then stand in the inclined position shown in Figure 1.

A container comprising a body having front, back and side walls, bottom forming flaps on said body and a backing sheet secured on the inner surface of said back Wall, said sheet carrying a closure flap for the top of the container, said flap being connected to said sheet so as to hinge on a transverse crease line, said top closure nap being adapted to operate as a display card when in an erect position, and said sheet being precisely located in a position wherein said crease or hinge lies below the top edge of said back wall so that said edge will operate as a stop to maintain said flap in an erect display card position substantially in alignment with said back wall.

A container comprising a body having front, back and side Walls, a :re-enforcing inner backing sheet mounted on the inner surface of said back Wall, said sheet having a hinged'ilap operating as a display card, the hinge for said nap being located below the top 'edge of said back wall in a 105 position so that said top edge Will operate'as a stop or abutment to maintain said display card in erect display position substantially yin alignment With the back wall, said sheet having means adapted toengage said bodyto support the same 11 in inclined display position. A container of the class described'comprising an outer body having a back Wall, a reenforcing backing sheet secured to the inner surface of said back Wall, said backing sheet having connected thereto a folding flap extending above the top edge of said back vva-ll, said flap being adapted to fold on a crease located belowsaid top edge whereby said edge operates as a stop to maintain said iiap in an erect position, said sheet having ymeans adapted to engage said body to adjustably support the same in inclined display position.
5. A container of the class described comprising a coilapsible tubular body having front, back and side walls, a backing sheet secured on the inner surface of said back wall, bottom closure means extending from said backing sheet and forming a support for the container in the set up condition, said backing sheet having a folding ex- 14() tension adapted to be utilized as a display card extending vfrom said back Wall, said display card being hingedly connected to said backing sheet, and the hinge for said card being located below the top edge of said back Wall so that said top 145 edge will operate as a stop to maintain said card in an erect display position.

A container comprising a body having front, back, side walls and an open top and bottom, an inner backing sheet secured to said back wall, said backing sheet having a portion adapted to provide a bottom for the container and a support for the body when set up for display, a flap extending from and hinged to said backing sheet, said flap in its closed position covering the open top -of the container, said flap in its erect position providing a display card extending upwardly from said back wall, the hinge for said flap being located below the top edge of said back wall so that said edge operates as a stop to maintain said flap in set up display position, said front wall having an openbij 8. A container of the class described comprising a body having back, side and front walls and an open top, a re-enforcing backing sheet or inner member secured to said back wall, said backing sheet having closure means forming a bottom for the container, said closure means being adjustable, and means for retaining said closure means in adjusted position so as to provide a relatively inclined bottom whereby the container is supported in an inclined display position.
