Description

UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
GEORGE W. MABIE, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN PEN-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 194,153, dated August 14, 1877 application filed July 2, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. MABIE, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New 'York, have invented an Improvement in Pen-Holders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.
My invention has for its object to secure greater convenience in inserting pens into penholders, and a firmer support of the pen when inserted.
The invention consists in the combination, with the outer barrel of the pen-holder, into which the stick is fitted, of-an inner barrel having two different diameters and a shoulder, formed in such manner that when the inner barrel is inserted in the outer barrel, in which the larger diameter of the inner barrel fits, an annular space is left for the easy insertion therein of the pen, the part of said inner barrel which has the smallest diameter having in it a longitudinal slit or slits to form a spring or springs for clamping the pen in the outer barrel, as hereinafter described.
Figure l in the accompanying drawing is a side view of a pen-holder constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 isalongitudinal central section of the outer barrel and a partial section of the inner barrel. Fig.3 is an. end view.
A is the stick, fitted to the outer barrel b in the usual manner, and into which is fitted the inner barrel 0 c, 0 indicating the part of. said inner barrel having the larger diameter, and
. 0 indicating the part having the smaller diameter.
The said inner barrel is made of such length that, when inserted in the outer barrel, the said inner barrel projects slightly out of the inner barrel, as shown in Fig. 2.
The formation of said inner barrel with two diameters leaves thereonashoulder, 11, against which the pen abuts when inserted in the holder.
The smaller part c of the inner barrel has formed in it a slit or slits, e, preferably two or more, which allow the intervening parts f to act as springs to hold the pen when inserted in the holder. 1 V
This construction enables the pen to be readily and easily inserted in the holder on any side of the inner barrel, and to be firmly held when inserted, the inner end of the pen resting firmly against the shoulder d on the inner barrel.
The said inner barrel may be attached to the said outer barrel by riveting, solderingyor otherwise, and the two barrels thus joined may be made detachable from the larger endofthe stick, to slip the same over the smaller end of said stick when the holder is to be carried in the pocket, in which case the larger end of the stick which fits into the outer barrel is provided with a ferrule.
I claim- As a new article of manufacture, the stock A, fitted in one end of the outer barrel b, and the inner barrel fitted in the other end of the barrel b, and having the enlarged end 0 and the reduced outer end 0, which isslitted to yield to accommodate pens having different sized and shaped shanks, substantially as and for the object shown and described.
GEORGE W. MABIE.
