Description
N0. 118,376. 'Patented Aug. 22, 1871.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK W. MATTERN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,376, dated August 22, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK W. MATTERN, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Paper-Weight and Pen-Extractor; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawing and to the letters of referencemarked thereon. making a part of this speciiication'.
The nature of my invention consists in combining with a paper-weight a pen-extractor, to take the pens out of holders without hurting or soiling the fingers.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is aside view, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal vertical section of a combined paper-weight and pen-extractor.
A represents a paper-weight, provided with a shank or neck, B, and knob C, all constructed in any suitable or desirable manner. The shank or neck B is made hollow, and the knob C provided with a screw, D, for screwing into the same. Through the neck B is a horizontal hole through which a bar, a, is passed 5 said bar being pivoted at one end and having room enough at the other end to play slightly up and down. Under this bar, within the shank B, is a spring', I), for forcing the bar upward, while the screw D acts upon it in the opposite direction.
By turning the knob C so as to loosen the screw D the spring' b throws the bar a upward, allowing the pen in the holder to be inserted under said bar. By now turning the knob in the opposite direction the bar a is clamped onto the pen so that the same can be withdrawn without soiling or injuring the lingers.
The same object may be accomplished in various other ways. For instance, the bar t and spring b may be dispensed with and the screw D be allowed to come down upon the end of the pen, there being a hole in the shank for the insertion of the pen.
Having thus fully described my inven tion, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is*
In combination with a paper-weight, A, having hollow shank B, knob C, and horizontal aperture in said shank, the screw D,witli or without the bar a, and spring b, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 10th day of May, 1871.
FREDERICK WV. MATTERN.
