IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR DECANTING LIQUCR.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent-No; l86,l 75, dated January 9, 1877 application filed December 15, 1876.

To all whom it may concern:

Beit known that I, EUGENE SNYDER, of Harrisburg, in the county of Dauphin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Devices for Decanting Liquor, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

The invention relates to an improved device, which serves both for decanting liquor, and also as a faucet and cork-extractor; and consists in the elements hereinafter fully described. A

The object of the invention is to provide a hollow shaft, having a heavy thread upon its exterior, with a screw or gimlet pointed needle, which protrudes beyond the shaft, and, with it, forms a means of introduction or an extractor; but when withdrawn the shaft answers as a means to extract the cork, or as a faucet, it being provided with an ordinary stop -cock, and, preferably, with a conduit- Figure l is a side elevation of a device embod ying the elements of the invention. In the accompanying drawings, A represents a tubular shaft, its lower exterior parts being provided with the thread a, which tapers downward, and is of such dimensions as to hold firmly in a cork when inserted, and thus serves either as a means of introduction The shaft A is provided at the swell b with an ordinary two-way stop-cock, B, the aperture in which corresponds accurately with that of the diameter of the bore of the shaft A, and thus, when the cock is open, an aperture or bore of even size extends through the entire shaft.

The upper end of the shaft is provided on its exterior with a male thread, d, and on its interior with the recess e, having an annular shoulder at its base, and a vertical groove, f, on one side.

rIhe purpose of the recess e is to receive the annular base of the head D of the needle E. The guide h thereon, fitting into the groove j', retains the shaft of the needle in a fixed position.

The shaft of the needle E is somewhat longer than that of the shaft A, and is provided at its lower end with the gimlet-point F, the dimensions of the needle and its arrangement being such that when the guide h is pressed to the base of the groove f, the gimlet-point E shall project beyond the shaft, and forni a continuation of and point for, the thread d on the exterior 4of the shaft.

It is plain that when thus inserted, the needle, passing through the aperture in the cock B, prevents its being turned, and that with the threaded shaft serves as a convenient means of introducing a tube into the coutents of the bottle; furthermore, that in the operation of introducing the device, no dust or fragments from the cork are forced into the bottle, and that the device serves as an extractor, the cock and upper parts of the shaft being utilized as a handle.

When it is desired to draw the liquor, the needle is withdrawn, the cock being turned off the instant the point of the needle clears it. Thus the liquor is confined in the bottle, and may be decanted as desired.

As, however, the complete inversion of the bottle is often inconvenient, there is provided a conduit, H, which consists of a cylindrical head, t, closed at one end, and threaded on the interior of the lower part of the other, the thread terminating in an annular shoulder, above which is provided an aperture, serving as the mouth of the pipe or tube m, which stands at somewhat more than a right angle to the parts of the head t' below.

The thread on the head t' readily engages that on the upper end of the shaft A, and the head being worked down to place, it is obvious that the liquor can be readily decanted through the pipe mby a semi-inversion ofthe bottle.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In a device for decanting liquor, a tubular shaft provided upon its exterior with a thread, which is completed by a removable giulietpoint, substantially as set forth.

In testimony that I claim the foregoing improvement in devices for decanting liquor, as above described, I have hereunto set my hand this 13th day of December, 1876.
