UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGEQ SILAS W. COX, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN PADS FOR COPYlN G-PRESSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 194,132, dated August 14, 1877; application filed June 5, 1877.
To all whom it may concern a q Be it known that I, BILAS W. COX, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements on Pads for Copying-Presses, of which the following is a full and exact description,
reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in
I which In making these pads 1 use a bibulous sheet, which may be made of blotting-paper, or any other suitable material that will best absorb and retain moisture, and fix thereto a metallic back, which I preferably make of foil, and which I secure to the bibulous sheet by any cement that will resist the action of moisture, and that will make the two parts adhere inseparably together.
In using these pads the spongy side is made wet over its entire surface and placed with its dampened face against the leaf of the copyingbook upon which the impression is to be taken. The writing is placed against the opposite side of the leaf, and the book subjected to the required pressure in a copying press. moisture of the bibulous material instantane' ously and evenly dampens the leaf of the book, so that it will readily receive the impression of the writing, One wetting of the pad will be found sufficient for taking a large number of copies, and by using a solution of the chloride of calcium for wetting it, it will absorb moisture fromthe atmosphere so as to retain its dampness for a considerably longer time than when water alone is used.
Instead of cementing a sheet of foil to the bibulous material, the metallic back may be formed by coating one side of the pad with a solution of tin or other soluble metal which will attach itself firmly to the bibulous sheet.
I claim as my invention- The copyingpress pad herein described,
having a face composed of bibulous material secured to a metallic back, in the manner and for the purpose herein specified.
SILAS W. COX.
