AFTON CHURCH, OF NEWV YORK, N. Y.
PAD FOR COPYlNG-PRESSES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 372,454, dated November 1, 1887.
Application filed Ottobcr :25, 1886.
T0 aZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, Arron Cannon, of the city, county, and State of New York, have in; vented a new and Improved Pad for Copying- Presses, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improved pad for copyingpresscs, and has for its object to provide a pad of absorbent material adapted for detachable attachment to the under face of the follower, whereby impressions may be taken for an indefinite period withoutthe aid of single blotters or cloths.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
Figure l is a front elevation of a letterpress having my pad attached; and Fig. 2 is a pen spective view, partly sectional, of the pad it self.
It is the aim of this invention to render the process of copying easy and pleasant as well as rapid.
To that end I employ a smoothed faceplate, A, made corresponding in shape to the under face of the follower B of a letterpress, C, and attach to the under side of said plate a pad, a, of absorbent material, by drawing tightly over the same a piece of cotton canvas, 0, or similar material, and securing its edges, by tack ing or otherwise, preferably within the under edges of the said board A.
Near the ends of onelongitudinal side of the plate A, upon the top thereof, I now attach spring-clamps D, while centrally the opposite upper longitudinal edge of the said plate I secure any form of clamp E, common to the trade, capable of being sprung back in line with Serial No. 21 ,149. (No model.)
the edge when the pad is to be attached to the follower of a press.
In the use of my invention the pad is placed in a shallow disk of water or otherwise dampened. \Vhen sufficient moisture has been absorbed, it is taken out, passed beneath the follower B of the press C, and the clamps 1) made to engage the edge of the said follower. The spring catch E is now sprung back and the plate brought up parallel with and against the under side of the follower and held rigidly thereto by the said spring clamp E, one or more of which may be employed, as deemed advisable.
In copying, the book is introduced open, the page adapted to receive the impression only covering the letter, which is made to rest upon the ordinary rubber or oiled sheet, and the follower is then run down, bringing the pad in contact with the leaf, and an impression is had. The leaf may be then turned back, the letter withdrawn, and the rubber sheet introduced below the next letter, and so on.
The pad will retain moisture enough to suecesst'ully copy for days. \Vhen dry, it is read ily detached and again dampened.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. As an improved article of manufacture, a copying-pad consisting of plate provided with absorbent material on one face and with means of attachment to the follower of a copyingpress, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with the follower of a copyingpress, of a detachable pad of absorbent material and means of attaching said pad to the follower, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
