IMPROVEMENT IN LABELING PLUG-TOBACCO.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 194,064, dated August 14, 1877; application filed May 12, 1877.
i To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, ROBERT WrLsoN, PAUL J. Sonc, and JoHN AUER, of Middletown, in the county of Butler and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Labels for PlugTobaoco; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 represents a roll of tobacco in the first stage of preparation for the tobacco-molds, with one girdle-label surrounding it,and includes a transverse section of the same. Fig. 2 represents the plug of tobacco as it appears after compression in the molds, and includes atransverse section thereof. Fig. 3 represents both a side view and a sectional view of the plug with the girdle secured by punctures or indentations.
Our invention relates to a mode of preparing plug-tobacco for the market; and it consists in securing a girdle-label around the plug, as herein set forth.
We prefer the use of a thin flexible ribbon, B, of tin-foil for the purpose indicated.
This belt or girdle will be of sufficient length to surround the plug A of tobacco and overlap, as illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings,
and when thus overlapped the contiguous ends may be fastened together by the stroke of a small mallet furnished upon its face with a number of short blunt teeth, which will produce perforations or indentations O in the overlapping ends of the tin-foil, and thus secure the girdle-label B in place.
Various means of fastening a metal label smoothly around the plug during the stages of manufacture might be practiced; but we prefor to secure the girdle around the middle of the plug of tobacco, as before described, after itis taken from the mold, and before it is packed and compressed in the caddy.
We claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A plug of tobacco having a metal girdlelabel around its outer wrapper, held in place by indentation or compression of its contiguous ends, substantially as specified.
