10 Claims.
The present invention relates to figured toys such as dolls and the like. wherein the use of metallic and other members for attaching the various parts making up the metallic members are usually subject to corrosion and breakage, thereby constituting a source of danger and hazard to babies and young children. In the usual doll construction, the arms and/or legs are secured to the body portion by providing metal hooks or projections embedded in the arms and legs to which may be secured elastic bands, cords, or metallic springs or similar devices interconnecting the arms and legs interiorly of the body portion of the doll whereby the limbs are maintained in their proper positions on the body portion. After a comparatively short period of time, it frequently occurs that the hooks will break off from the limbs so that the limbs'be-' come detached'andthetoy is then rendered unfit for further use. In such breakage, the sharp points of the hooks or the springs become a serious menace to a child in that serious injury might be inflicted before the damage to the doll or breakage has been noticed or observed by the parent or custodian'of' the child.
It is the primary'object of the invention to provide'a doll which maybe thoroughly washed or-sterilized without the likelihood of corrosion of any of the'parts as would increase the likelihood of breakage or disassembly of the parts, the sterilization thereby affording a maximum sanitation;
A further object of theinvention is toprovide a toy of this type formed entirely'of rubber so as to reduceto a very'minimum the likelihood of injury to a child ofvery tender age. I
Aastillfurther object of the invention resides in providing a novel limb construction for dolls" andathe like wherein the limbs such asthe arms and/or 'legs-are secured to the body-.portionwitm out the use of any metallic parts such as hooks or the like. The invention conte'mplates'an integral-limb construction wherein the limbs on the opposite sides of the body portion are connected by molding an integralelastic member to the opposedjoint'ends of the limbs. The limbs are preferably made of molded material such as rubber with which may'be formed as an part ofthe limbs the elastic connection.
' A further object of the invention resides in a novel method of assembly of the; doll wherein interconnected: limbs are secured to the body portion of the dollbypassing one-of the limbs through A the bod-y portion to dispose a limb in toy is avoided, which integral its proper position at. each side. of the bodypor-i tion.

portions of themember 7 joining each arm being enlarged as at 8and9 to form bearingsurfaces adapted to seat in the sockets land Brespectively in the body portion'of the doll. In this former the invention shown in Figs. 1 and 3; the sockets and-bearing surfaces constitute what'might be of the arms in all directions. Lateral movement of the arms is illustrated by the dotted lines in Fig. 1.
To assemble the arm unit shown in Fig. 3
with the body portion of the doll one arm such as 6 is inserted into an aperture 10 formed at the base of the socket 3 through the interior of the body portion of the doll in a direction as shown by the arrows in Fig. 4, and outwardly through an aperture 11 in the base of the socket 4. v, This operation is illustrated clearly in Fig. 4. The length of the elastic member 7 is such that when one arm has been drawn through the body portion of the doll, the member 7 will be stretched and placed under tension so as to draw both arms into the socket'members 3 and 4 and hold them in their proper positions. By virtue of this tension on member '7, the arms will be maintained in any.
position to which they are moved owing to the friction set up between the bearing surfaces 8 and 9 and the sockets 3 and 4. It will be observed that the apertures 10 and 11 at the base of the sockets3 and .4 are smaller than'the arms and form flexible lips 12 and 13 which may be defiected or deformed as shown in Fig. 4 in the passage of the arm through the body portion in the assembling operation. completely through. the body portion the lips 12 and 13 will spring back into place and prevent the assembly from coming apart in' the normal use of the toy. While the above assembling operation has been described with relation to the passage of arm 6 through the body portion 1 it should be apparent that the assembly might be made from the opposite side by passing arm 5 through the body portion in the opposite direction.
, A modified form of joint at the place where the limbs engagethe body portion is shown in Fig. 2.
In this modified construction, the structure is generally the same except that the sockets 15 and 16 are given a stepped formation for cooperation with similarly stepped bearing surfaces 1'I and 18 formed on the arms. In this construction the joint will not be universal as in the form hereinbefore-described andmovement of the arms in a forward or rearward direction only is afforded.
- As previously mentioned, it is to be understood that the leg construction may be similar to the arm construction described above in which event the same method of assembly of the legs may be followed as in the case-of the arms. The arms and legs may be hollow or solid as desired.
Where it is desired to provide a doll of the type above described'with a movable head, the elastic member '7 joining the- arms 5 and 6 may be provided with a lateral extension 20, also of elastic or resilient material and preferably molded or otherwise formed integrally with the arms and joining member 7 (see Figs. 5 and 6). The free extremity. of the extension 20 is enlarged as at 21 to provide a substantially mushroom shaped button or retainer head. In assembling the 1 parts, the arm unit, with the extension 20, is applied to the doll body in the same manner as hereinbefore described with relation to the other forms of the invention shown in Figs. 1 to 4, it being understood that the doll body and the arm unit are sufliciently flexible and the parts yieldable, being preferably of rubber, to enable the extension 20 and button 21 to be drawn within the doll body along with the member '7. The upper end of the extension 20 with the button 21 is then drawn through an aperture 22 provided After passing the arm in the upper end of the doll body, thereby disposing the button 21 exteriorly of the body. The head 23 is provided with an aperture 24 in the base or neck thereof and by passing the button 21 through the aperture 24 to dispose the same within the head, the head will be thereby movably secured to the body. In passing the button into the head, the button willflex about the extension 20 so that it may enterthe head through the aperture 24, and after it has been passed completely into the interior of the head, it will automatically expand and assume its normal substantially mushroom shape as shown in the drawings,
thereby preventing the head from becoming detached from the body in the normal use of the doll, while permitting the head to be turned on the body about the extension 20 as an axis. As in the limb constructions hereinbefore referred to, the head is attached to the body without any metallic parts subject to rust and breakage, and thus eliminates another of the usual sources of potential danger to children.
While the shoulder joint shown in Figs. 5 and 6 is similar to that of Fig. 2, it is to be understood that the particular formof joint is immaterial and may take the form as in Figs. 1, 3 and l, or any other suitable form. As a further example, the same principle of securing the head to the bouymay be followed in'securing the arms to the body by providing buttons'similar to 2l-at each end of the elastic member 7. If desired, the buttons might be molded or otherwise integrally formed on the doll body at the points of.
as described with relation to the attachment of the head to button 21. Also, the buttons might be formed on the arms, legsand head, in
which event the buttons would be snapped into the body. 1
The construction of'the doll and the method of assembly should be apparent from the fore going, and it will be obvious that there is'thus provided a'simple and inexpensive construction wherein the danger of injury to children due to breakage of parts is virtually eliminated. Owing to the fact that the doll may be made completely of rubber the same may be completely sterilized'without subjecting any parts to corrosion or rust, thereby safeguarding the health of the children playing with such toy.
While the specific details of construction have been herein shown and described the invention is not confined thereto as alterations may be made without departing from the spirit thereof as defined by the-appended claims.
What I claim as new and Letters Patent is:-
1. A figured toy of the class described comprise ing a bodyportion, and limb members-formed of molded material and assembled on said body portion,.said limb members being disposed at opposite sides of saidbody portion and being joined together by an elastic member integrally molded with said ,limbmembers.
2. A toy doll comprising a molded rubber body portion, limbmembers assembledon said body portion, said limb members being disposed at opposite sides of said body portion and formed of molded rubber, and means for securing'said limb members in position on said body portion, said means comprising an elastic member connecting said limb members 'interiorly of said body portion and molded integrally with said limb members.
3. A figured toy of the class described comprisdesire to secure by its mg a hollow molded body portion having limb sockets'formed therein on opposite sides thereof for the reception of said limb members, said sockets being provided with apertures in the base thereof, limb members receivable in said sockets and forming joints therewith, and an elastic member extending through said apertures and integrally connected with said limb members for maintaining said limb members in said-sockets, said elastic member being of such length as to be placed under tension when said limb members are positioned in their respective sockets. v 4. A figured toy of the class described comprising a hollow body portion formed of resilient bers adapted to be assembled on said body portion on opposite sides thereof and receivable in said sockets, said limb members being formed of molded material and including an elastic connecting member integrally molded with said limb members to extend therebetween, said connecting member being adapted to be positioned interiorly of the body portion when one of said limb memhers is passed through the apertures at the base of said sockets and through said body portion to dispose a limb member at each side of said body portion, said connecting member further maintaining said limb members in said sockets after the passage of said limb member as aforesaid.
5. A limb unit for toy dolls and the like comprising spaced limb members of molded material,
with said limb members.
6. The method of constructing figured toys and the like, which comprises forming a body por- I 3 members through said apertures to dispose a limb member at each side of said body portion.
' 7. The method of assembling integrally con nected limb members with a body portion of a toy doll or the like, which comprises passing one of said limb members completely through the bod portion to dispose a limb member at each side of said body portion.
8. Fastening means for securing the arms and head to the body of toydolls and the like, comprising a resilient. member adapted to be positioned within the doll body and extending intermediate the arms on opposite sides of the body, said member being integral with said arms and provided with an integral lateral extension adapted to project from the upper extremity of the doll body, said projecting portion of said extension having an enlargement adapted to be positioned within the doll head and constituting a retainer for the head when applied to the body.
